The Alberta Selects beat the MCC tourists at the Westwinds Cricket Ground in Calgary by four wickets. Alberta held MCC to just over four runs an over, thanks to economic bowling from Canadian international Khurram Chohan and Farhan Malik, as well as Khurram Tahir picking up the wickets of three middle order batsmen. One of the MCC tourists had told me there was a dependence on the front five batsmen. In this match, three of the top order made between 45 and 50, with two going cheaply.

MCC tie with Canada Selects

Captains Osinde and Gallian toss for innings

Eddie Norfolk

A run-out after the successful completion of one run produced a tie which delighted the Canadian Select XI fielders on Sunday at the Toronto Cricket Club. MCC’s Harry Smallwood was run-out at the non-striker’s end in a situation where the Canadian side’s captain, Henry Osinde set a mixed field. Some fielders were left on the boundary, others were geared to stopping any run through the point to extra cover area on the off-side. Certain captains might have put all the fielders in place to stop the single and force the batsman to hit over the top. Osinde, on his day, has both powered a match winning six for Canada, and taken some fine catches in the deep. He put himself at long-off and must have swept in to field the ball, throw it to the bowler, leg-spinner Runvindu Gunasekera who dived to dislodge the bails as Smallwood dived to seek the safety of the crease.

The umpire’s finger must have gone up. The Canadian players jumped for joy, Smallwood was run out and the match ended in a tie. The spirit of cricket won the day and, perhaps, it was the lambs of the future of Canadian cricket who roared like lions. The lion shall sit with the lamb.

Ontario XI v MCC

The Ontario XI v MCC 50-over game is taking place today (July 20th, 2012) at the Maple Leaf Cricket Club, King City, Ontario.
Ontario team: Rizwan Cheema (captain), Saad Nazar, Tristan Ali, Varun Sehdev, Sharoze Sham, Khalid Ammar, Gyles Dias, Faad Khadn , Syed Abbas, Pushjeet, Damien Holder, Nikhil Dutta.
Ontario made 200 all out in 45 overs with captain Rizwan Cheema leading the way with 76.
MCC passed the total in the 48th over with 5 wickets in hand.

A momento to remind cricket lovers visiting the Maple Leaf Cricket Club in the future that the MCC “woz ‘ere” in 2012 is presented by MCC Tour Manager Mr. Steve Salisbury (right of picture) to Rizwan Cheema (left of main trio in picture) after Friday’s game between the MCC and an Ontario XI. Leslie Soobrian (President of the Cricket Council of Ontario, and of the Canadian Commonwealth Cricket Association of Toronto). Rizwan Cheema showed his power during an innings of 76 and some other shots that show he has a good eye for the ball. His team battled away trying to defend a total of around 200, and, as he said, given a couple more chances against this MCC touring team, the Ontario XI might pull off a win.
