Launch of the 2019 CIMA/Mayor’s School Cricket Tournament

City of Toronto Mayor John Tory and Helen Berhane, Chair of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants Canada (CIMA), hosted an awards ceremony on Friday, April 26, 2019 for the participants and coaches involved in the 2018 Mayor’s School Cricket Tournament. The event, inside the Sports Dome at Central Technical School, also launched the 2019 tournament.
School cricket players and community coaches from several schools operating under the banners of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) attended and received Mayor’s recognition awards for their achievements in cricket in 2018.
Mayor Tory and CIMA Chair Berhane were joined by TCDSB Chair Maria Rizzo, TCDSB Associate Director and Chief Operating Officer Dan Koenig, TDSB Executive Superintendent Peter Singh, City of Toronto Community Recreation Manager Kelvin Seow and Central Technical School Principal Lisa Edwards.
Guest speakers also included Ken Jeffers, a current member of the Toronto Police Services Board. Mr Jeffers, when with Toronto Parks and Recreation, was involved in the creation of the CIMA/Toronto Mayor’s Cricket tournament over ten years ago in partnership with CIMA Canada board members, such as Ranil Mendis, school board representatives and sponsors.
Representatives of leading sponsors including Mr. Mahes Wickramasinghe, EVP and CCO of Canadian Tire Corporation, Mr. Scott Fraser, President of Jumpstart Charities, and Mr Tom Mihalik, President of Tom’s Place also spoke in support of the Mayor’s School Cricket event and the related Cricket Across the Pond Program.
Ontario’s Minister of Education Lisa Thompson was unable to attend but sent a letter supporting this schools cricket initiative.
Dwight Drummond, news anchor/co-host with CBC News Toronto, introduced the guest speakers. Vinod Sharma of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Canada, announced the recipients of the various awards.
The 2019 City of Toronto Mayor’s School Cricket tournament played at Sunnybrook Park and G. Ross Lord Park from May 15 to 31.
