“The Keyano Huskies are adding a new a men’s and women’s cricket program to their ranks for the 2019-2020 school year.

“We’ve always had a mandate of growing not only sports in the college, but being a part of the grassroots development in the community,” said Jonathan Lambert, director of athletics, sport and student wellness at Keyano College.

Irfan Bangash, the newly appointed head coach of the Huskies cricket team, grew up playing cricket in Pakistan, but moved to the United States before moving to Fort McMurray nine years ago.

In 2013, Bangash started the Fort McMurray Cricket Association. He said that when he first started the league he never thought he’d be teaching at an intercollegiate level.

When he was first asked to get involved, Bangash said he thought it was just to have a small camp demonstrating cricket at the college. A short time later he was being offered to coach the team.

“It’s the proudest moment of my life,” he said. “It’s like a dream come true.””
