The 5 team T20 Cricket NL Summer League came down to the final match this Saturday, with the Newfoundland Super Kings needing a win over the Royal Challengers to top the table. After posting a total of 175, they bowled out the Challengers for 110 to claim the Senthil Selvamani Trophy by 2 points (Senthil is a former president and coach of Cricket NL and a major force in the development of cricket in the province). The season consisted of a triple round robin between the teams, and the Superkings finished with 11 wins and just one loss. In claiming the title they ended a four-year period in which the NL Avengers won the league each year, including a 2-year unbeaten streak that was ended by NSK in mid-season. The Avengers took the trophy for the 40-over competition, played for the first time this year, involving three teams
Games in Newfoundland are played at the RCAF Ground on a high quality mat laid over concrete; the ground is close to international dimensions and is in excellent condition, probably making it the best cricket ground east of Toronto from the point of view of playing conditions (although infrastructure is lacking). The league awards were also presented; Nick Baxter was named the league MVP, averaging over 100 with the bat, and with his left arm pace earning 19 wickets at an economy of just 3.1. Rahul Vashishtha was named best bat, scoring over 500 runs, sharing the award with Maanik Arora, who made 456 runs. Mukul Dhawan was the top bowler with 20 wickets.
The NL season concludes with Cup games, a best of 3 series between 1st and second place teams, and a one-off challenge between third and 4th place teams. The Avengers beat NSK in the first match on Saturday, but the remaining matches, scheduled for Sunday, were postponed due to the forecast wind and rain associated with Hurricane Dorian.
