Qualification path for the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup

CANADA TO HOST AMERICAS QUALIFIER IN JULY 2021
The revised qualification path schedule for the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup was issued today (14
December 2020) via an ICC Media Release. The actual 2022 ICC T20 World Cup will be played
in Australia in October and November 2022.
Within the overall mix for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the 16 teams that originally
qualified for the 2020 Australia event that was called off due to COVID-19 will now play in the
ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in India. As a reminder, which also has relevance on the path
to the 2022 World Cup, the participating teams for the 2021 T20 World Cup in India are:
Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, England, India, Ireland, Namibia, Netherlands, New
Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West
Indies.
Canada will host ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier in July 2021. The top from the
eight participating teams from the Americas Regional Qualifier will advance to the Global
Qualifier stage. The eight participating countries in the Americas Regional qualifier are:
Argentina, Bahamas, Belize, Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, Panama, USA. Games are due
to be played from 17 July 2021 through to 23 July 2021.
One team from the Americas Qualifier will advance to ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier A
that is scheduled to be played in February 2022. The other Americas qualifier will advance to
ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier B that is scheduled to be played in May 2022.
The host countries for the two Global Qualifiers for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be
named at a later date.
The revised scheduling is based on an expanded return of international cricket during the early
part of 2021. The ICC will be monitoring the ongoing COVID-19 situation and will act, if
necessary, to protect the hosts and participants in each of the scheduled qualification events.

The Rescheduled Qualification Path to the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup
A) The Fast-Track to the Global Qualifiers
The bottom four teams from the 2021 T20 World Cup will each play in one of two Global
Qualifiers for the 2022 Mens T20 World Cup.
Nepal, Singapore, UAE and Zimbabwe each qualify for the one of the two Global Qualifiers for
the 2022 T20 World Cup based on their MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings.

B) The Broader Track to the Global Qualifiers
The four-step qualification process to the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup involves 86 teams
(including 67 ICC Associate Member teams) competing for 15 spots in that 2022 T20 World
Cup. Some 225 T20Is are scheduled to be played in 11 regional qualification tournaments across
the five ICC Regions.
The qualification process for the ICC Americas Region will comprise just one top-tier
qualification tournament from which two teams will advance to the Global Qualifier, which will
include 16 teams. Four teams will advance from the Global Qualifier to the 2022 Men’s T20
World Cup.
The ICC Regional Qualifiers will also see two teams advance to the Global Qualifier from each
of the Asia and Europe regions while one team will advance to the Global Qualifier from from
each of Afirca and East Asia- Pacific.
As noted in the introductory section of this report, the remaining eight spots in the Global
Qualifiers will comprise direct entry for Nepal, Singapore, UAE and Zimbabwe based on their
MRF Tyres ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings plus the four bottom teams from the 2021 ICC
Men’s T20 World Cup. Four teams from the Global Qualifiers will join Australia (hosts) and the
11 automatic qualifiers from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 to complete the 16-teams in
the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.
