2022 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup Playoffs

Canada U19s to face Ireland U19 in Plate Playoffs

The Super League Playoffs to decide the 2022 ICC Under 19 Champions are due to begin on Wednesday (26 January). One Super League Quarter-Final will be played on each day from Wednesday through Saturday. The winning quarter-finalists will advance to the Semi-Finals, scheduled on 1st February and 2nd February with the Final due to be played on (date).

Canada U19s will meet Ireland U19s on Tuesday (25 January) at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad in one of the two opening games of the Plate Competition. The Plate competition will decide the 9th through 16th places in this year’s tournament. Ireland U19s played a four game series against Zimbabwe U19s in the West Indies before the World Cup warm-up games began. Ireland U19 captain Tim Tector did well with the bat against Zimbabwe U19s with innings of 94, 20, 37 and 53 but Tector will be disappointed with his innings of 4, 15 and 1 since this 2022 U19 CWC began. Canada U19s can expect Tector to seek a return to batting form in the Plate competition.

Wicketkeeper Joshua Cox struck an unbeaten century (111*) in Ireland’s opening game win against Uganda 15 Jan) and Phillipus Le Roux made 32. Ireland tallied 236/9 (50 ov) then bowled out Uganda for 197 (48.1 ov). Uganda captain Pascal Murungi made a defiant 63.

An opening stand of 164 (25.4 ovs) by India U19 opening bats Angkrish Raghuvanshi (79) and Harnour Singh (88) set the way for a total of 307/5 (50 ovs). Ireland U19s replied with 133 (39 ov). Scott MacBeth top scored with 32 while Cox made 28. South Africa U19s lost two early wickets against Ireland U19s but rallied to 315/7 (50 ovs) thanks to captain George van Heerden 111 (93 balls) and Dewald Brevis 96 (122 balls). Ireland’s opening bat Nathan McGuire top scored with 42, Matthew Humpreys made 38 and Phillipus Le Roux 33 in a total of 158 all out.

So Ireland U19s finished third in Group B, which means they play the team that came 4th in Group A, Canada U19s in the opening round of the Plate competition.
