Chilliwack cricket news (Chilliwack Times)

The Eastern District No-Ballerz women’s cricket team scored their first-ever victory in dramatic fashion Sunday.
The No-Ballerz played West Vancouver Sunday for the third time this season, having narrowly lost both previous fixtures against the ladies from the big city. In this match, though, the Chilliwack girls took over the game immediately, with quick wickets killing off any chance of West Vancouver scoring a formidable total.

Tight bowling from Esther Byers has been a key for the ladies. Sunday was no different, as Byers led the way with 2-12 from five overs. Rita Bergsma secured her first two wickets, and fast bowling from Jen Gafka scared the West Van girls to just 98 runs.

The No-Ballerz, as the ladies are known, batted cautiously but lost regular wickets in their run chase. They fell to 59 for seven, and still requiring 40 to win, with just seven overs remaining.

Gafka and Lisa Sperling then played two very different innings in their efforts to win. Sperling batted with defence in mind and held her own against some good West Van bowling while Gafka smashed the ball to all parts in a brilliant inning of 39 not out from just 42 balls.

The girls scored their winning run with a boundary from Gafka on the third last ball of the match to give the ladies their first ever win in only their first season, a huge achievement given none of the girls had played previously.

ANDERSON THE FIRST CENTURION

The Eastern District Stags men’s cricket team faced Richmond at home on Saturday in a must-win match that began with Richmond batting first and losing four quick wickets.

The run chase began well for the Stags, with Marcus Akhtar and Scott Anderson defending their wicket amongst some cautious run scoring. The skipper smashed a total of 116 not out to help the Stags through to the total of 160 in just 19 overs.

Anderson faced just 65 balls and only had to run 22 of his 116 runs, having amassed 13 fours and seven sixes in his tally. He became the first Centurion (an individual score of 100 or more) at the Chilliwack-based club.
