Tuesday morning at Eglinton Flats involved Middle Schools from western parts of Toronto. There was a suprise win, described as “a miracle”, by Kingsway-Lambton over defending champion Smithfield. Kingsway-Lambton scored 78 for four wickets in ten overs, then held Smithfield to 64 for five wickets in ten overs. So a 14 run win was a boost at the start of day for Kingsway-Lambton. The other 9am game at Eglinton Flats saw West Humber 71 for seven wickets (10 ov) beat Dixon Grove 48 for five wickets (10 overs) by 23 runs.
If the original construction of the Eglinton West subway line had not been stopped in the mid-1990’s, I would have taken the subway as far as Yonge and Eglinton en route to Sunnybrook Park in the east of Toronto. But a couple of buses, and some legwork got me to Sunnybrook Park in time for the 1pm decider of today’s Senior Boys East division games with Woburn (2 wins/0 losses) meeting Wexford (also 2/0).
The happenings at Sunnybrook Park, given earlier on Tuesday, may not have been entirely correct. There is little doubt that Woburn played Wexford at 1pm on the west pitch and SATEC played Marc Garneau on the east pitch around the same time. Woburn made 114 for two wickets, as previously reported, making Wexford struggle to 31 for nine in reply. But it seems information gleaned that both sides were unbeaten with two wins going into this match was incorrect, as there were only three teams in the group, namely Winston Churchill. Unbeaten with one win each seems more likely.
Marc Garneau’s total, when checked between umpires and scorer, increased by one run to 65 for nine wickets in ten overs. This proved sufficient for victory as SATEC replied with 55 for five wickets in ten overs.
During the course of the Garneau-SATEC game, I talked to the coach with the David and Mary Thomson school, whose side was waiting for a 3pm game. This came as a bit of a surprise to me, having not noticed any 3pm games in the schedules and not having made provision for staying for such a round of matches. He was pleased that more teams are in this Mayors Cricket tournament this year than last, but we both agreed Toronto schools outdoor championships have been going on for a few years. Woburn have been a dominant force.
The coach was watching the Garneau-SATEC game (SATEC being the Scarborough Academy for Technological Environmental and Computer Education) whilst his players were watching Woburn and Wexford. Someone had to look after the bags and the kit on the eastern side of the east ground. A gremlin in the works listed one of this trio of schools matches as involving George Vanier, who were due to have played on Monday. So one explanation is that the 3pm games on Tuesday were Senior Boys East quarter finals.
So an update on what transpires can be expected after the scores appear on the official tournament website for the Sunnybrook Park games, including news of whatever happened on Monday at Sunnybrook Park,
