The Guernsey XI beat the Canada XI at the Probiz County Ground, Hove, Sussex on Friday (May 18th) in a T20 match. Peter Port in Guernsey was the birthplace of General Isaac Brock, who lead a successful attack on Detriot during the war with the USA 1812. General Brock died in the Battle of Queenstown Heights in 1813, but that was another battle he helped win.
Canada batted first and began brightly with Nitish Kumar scoring 16 (12 balls) before being trapped lbw by Stuart Bisson in the fourth over. Canada XI 34 for one wicket (3.3 ov). Shaheed Keshvani and Zubin Surkari carried the score to 117 before Surkari was cuaght for 28 runs, scored from 35 balls. Keshvani top-scored with 77 runs from 58 balls. His innings included eight boundaries and three sixes. A knock that ended with a catch, presently credited to Unsure off the bowling of Dave Hooper. Canada XI 134 for four wickets (18.4 ov). Vik Tathe had been caught for 3 from the previous ball.
The Canada XI innings closed on 146 for four wickets. Hooper took two wickets for 29 runs in his four overs. Stuart Bisson took two for 29 in three overs.
G,H. Smit made 18 from 24 balls before being caught by Surkari off the bowling of Hassan Choetai at the end of the seventh over. Fellow opening bat Ross Kneller was bowled four balls later by Arsalan Qadir for 32 (20 balls, 3 fours, 1 six) leaving the Guernsey XI on 69 for two wickets. Jeremy Frith and Stuart Le Prevost regained control for the Guernsey XI with a stand of 61 for the third wicket that ended when Le Prevost was lbw to Carl Shankland for 25. Runs scored from 21 balls, including four boundaries. Guernsey X I 130 for three wickets from 15.5 overs. Six runs later Shankland bowled Frith for 27 (35 balls, one boundary). Manish Walia also took a late wicket, but the Guernsey XI reached a winning 147 runs for five wickets from the first ball of the 20th over.
A winning total, except on the game summary produced via the CricHQ software, that had the Canada XI as winners. Software which I seem to recall stated something about being ICC approved, but which seems to have one or two features that could do with some improvement.
There was said to be a delayed start due to rain in this game. During this delayed start, Canada was shown as 0 runs for 0 wicket and, apparently, trailed by 1 run. The game might have been tied if the Guernsey batsmen had taken notice of the need to only score one run during the 20th over, according to the software, rather than the two runs that would normally be required. But to end on a more positive note, Carl Shankland took two wickets for 20 runs in 3.1 overs.
