Up until now the only connection between Trinity Bight and the sport of cricket was during the filming of The Grand Seduction in the area last summer. The film, adapted from the original French version, told the story of a community that tries to entice a doctor to stay in their community by accommodating all of his interests — including cricket. Dave Liverman is the secretary of Cricket NL and was also a consultant on the film. He told The Packet there is also a strong historical connection to cricket in the area, one that most people probably don’t know about. “If you were speaking to somebody from the Bonavista peninsula in 1890 or 1900, they would know about cricket, it would have been played in their community,” he said. “But the game has died out pretty much completely. I think probably it didn’t survive the First World War.” He said back in those days, Trinity had its own team and regularly competed against teams from Catalina, Bonavista, Heart’s Content and St. John’s.
