ICC Americas U17 – Canada v USA

Canada Under 17’s scored 118/3 from 32.5 overs and beat the USA U17’s by seven wickets at Bermuda’s National Sports Stadium today (Tuesday, August 19). Canada’s innings progressed steadily from 66/3 after 20 overs until victory came in Canada’s opening game of this 2014 ICC Americas Development Tournament. The USA Under-17’s won the toss and elected to bat; Canada’s bowlers did well and restricted the USA to just 117/9 from their 50 overs.
Canada now meets Bermuda U17’s on Wednesday, Bermuda lost by 36 runs to the USA U17’s in Monday’s opening game of the tournament.

USA U17 Innings

USA U17’s openers added 29 before Sagar Patel was caught for 10 off Kurt Ramdath’s bowling, fellow opener Arjun Patel was run out for 5 as 29/0 became 29/2. Mohak Buch was stumped by Sarbjot Singh off Harsh Thaker’s bowling (42/3). Gauranshu Sharma made 15 before being caught off the spin of Harman Sidhu to leave the USA on 60/4. Thaker captured the wicket of Monday’s USA batting star Kushal Ganji, who was caught by Abdul Haseeb after scoring 8. Ganji made 79 on Monday against Bermuda.

Thaker caught and bowled Novendra Boodhoo for a duck next ball that left the USA on 62/6. Jash Patel lead a partial recovery adding 21 for the seventh wicket with Vivek Barbhalya, who was then caught by Thaker off Miraj Patel for 1 run. Shehan Perara came to the crease and battled away to score 12 not out.

Jash Patel was caught off Abraash Khan’s bowling for 24 (94/8), Keifer Phill made 7 before being caught and bowled by Abraash Khan. Keifer Phill and Abraash Khan had been team mates in the ICC Americas team in the recent West Indies Cricket Board Under19 Regional One Day Championships in Guyana. The USA U17 innings closed on 117/9 after 50 overs.

Harsh Thaker topped the Canadian bowling with 3/9 from 10 overs and Abraash Khan took 2/9 from 9 overs. Kurt Ramdath and Miraj Patel each bowled 10 economic overs, which is a key requirement in one day games, and can help apply some pressure on batsmen in longer forms of cricket. Ramdath took 1/17 and Patel 1/19. Harman Sidhu took 1/26 from 5 overs.

Canada U17 Innings

Ravish Kamath (3) and Harsh Thaker (1) were out cheaply as Canada lost two wickets to Shehan Perara’s bowling in reaching 19 runs. Opening bat Thursaanth Anantharajan scored 25 before being caught by Perara off Jash Patel’s bowling. He departed with Canada on 63/3. Anantharajan recently gained experience of cricket playing conditions in the south of England on the 2014 RBC CIMA Mayors’ Cricket Across the Pond tour.

Canadian captain Abraash Khan was then joined at the crease by Arslan Khan and the pair carried Canada to a seven wicket win after 32.5 overs. Abraash Khan was unbeaten on 40 and Arslan Khan was 24 not out when victory ended the otherwise unbroken fourth wicket stand after adding 55 valuable runs.

Shehan Perara took 2/21 from 6 overs for the USA, while Jash Patel picked up 1/32 from 10 overs.

Canada U17 play hosts Bermuda U17s on Wednesday (August 20), then the three teams play a second round of games in this ICC Americas Development tournament beginning on Thursday and concluding on Saturday.
