Jamaica Overpowers Canadian Juniors

Canada’s Under-19 team had a tough time against Jamaica Under-19’s on Saturday in the WICB Under-19 Regional Tournament. Jamaica, put in to bat, posted 280/2 from 50 overs then bowled out Canada for 113 at the St Elizabeth THS ground. Opening bat Jevoy Spence provided the foundation of Jamaica’s innings with 107* from 150 balls (6x4s, 2x6s) and Odean Smith pounded 68* from 32 balls during the closing overs.

Spence WICBU19and Odean Smith added 94 in an unbroken stand for the fourth wicket. The opening stand between Spence and Michael Frew took Jamaica to 144 before Frew was caught by Harsh Thaker off Abraash Khan’s bowling for 53. Frew’s 53 came from 93 balls and included 4 boundaries.

Ramone Francis made 17 runs from 27 balls before being caught at the wicket off Suliman Khan with 186 on the board for Jamaica Under-19’s. As both Jamaican wickets fell to designated “fast bowlers”, Canada picked up 0.2 bonus points (0.1 point for each wicket).

It seems, from a distance, that Abraash Khan was bowling near the end of Jamaica’s innings when Odean Smith thumped 6 boundaries and five sixes. Abraash Khan ended with 1/78 from 10 overs. Suliman Khan took 1/41 from 9 overs. Harsh Thaker conceded 26 runs from 7 overs and Miraj Patel bowled 10 overs for 44 runs. The other Canadian bowling figures were Abdul Haseeb 0/49 from 8 overs and Shlok Patel 0/27 from 5 overs.

Shan Anantharajan topped the Canadian innings with 34 runs from 47 balls. It appears he may have retired early then returned when two wickets had fallen. He hit one six in making 34 at which point he was run out. Opening bat Emmanuel David, presumably Khohkar, made 14, captain Abraash Khan made 12 and wicketkeeper Sarbjot Singh scored 18 lower down the batting order.

Oshane Thomas took one early wicket and followed with a couple of wickets to end the Canadian innings. Thomas ended with 3/30 from 10 overs. Odean Smith was credited with 3/25 from 8.2 overs, following his significant 68* that bolstered the Jamaican innings. Two of the wickets credited to Smith would seem to have been run outs. Canada lost two early wickets to run outs and the innings closed with a run out.

Canada’s next opponents are Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) on Monday (July 27). T&T reached 210/8 from 49.2 overs to beat Windward Islands 209/8 from 50 overs on Saturday. Scores that hide two significant unbroken ninth wicket partnerships. Opening bat Gidron Pope lead the Windwards with 65 before being fifth wicket to fall with 106 on the board. Windwards slumped to 122/8 before Ryan John (66*) and Joshua Challenger (25*) turned the tide with a useful stand.

Keagan Simmons was the main contributor in the top part of T&T’s innings, scoring 60. T&T rallied from 146/8 thanks to Jameel Maniram (39*) and support from captain Varinda Jagrup (14*) who won the game with 4 balls to spare.

In Saturday’s other match, Guyana reached 220/4 (35.1 overs) to beat Leeward Islands 217 all out (46.2 overs).
