Cricket on Water Street

Water Street cricket

Members of Cricket Newfoundland and Labrador set perhaps a unique precedent, playing cricket on the main street of their capital city, St. John’s. The organization had been asked to provide a demonstration prior to an outdoor screening of the film “The Grand Seduction”, set in Newfoundland and with cricket playing a prominent role. The street was closed off, stumps set up, and a short game of tapeball cricket took place as dusk fell. Dave Liverman, secretary of Cricket NL, and cricket consultant on the Grand Seduction provided some explanation and commentary while provincial team members Rakesh Negi, Rahul Vashishta, Kranthi Kumar, Abrar Khan and Amit Sundly showed off their skills. The tapeball zipped off the fast pitch, but we saw some big hitting – direct hits were scored on a number of windows, a police car, and at least one shot landed on the roof of a 5 story building. There were an estimated 200 people present for the demonstration and movie, and Cricket NL encourage other provincial organizations to follow their lead. After all Montreal’s snow cricket festival has spread across the country, so we look forward to cricket at Portage and Main, on Yonge and Bloor, Robson Street and Boulevard St. Laurent.
