Upon reading further, by finishing 4th in their group Canada would have to win a single match to advance from this tournament. Whereas, finishing 2nd or 3rd gives them two shots at advancing. The prospect seems realistic. The issue is that Canada has very little experience in big games at this level and virtually no success in this tournament. The T20 format is one in which we have badly under-performed. It will take something special from Dhaliwal, Cheema, Singh and especially the bowlers to succeed. Wins over Jersey, Nigeria and Hong Kong are their best chance in their group.

Squad is still not announced as of October 8th AM. All we know so far is that Navneet Dhaliwal is the captain from CC Facebook: "Wishing you all the best in Dubai Skipper Navi!". Are they waiting on the availability of one or more players?
Yes, Canada has not been great in the past at T20, a bit like Ireland. However this new bunch seems to be better at it than 50 overs. Singh, Dhaliwal, Cheema, Thomas with support from Nitesh, Saad, Wijeratne and Hamza...not bad on paper. Best wishes to them, hope they bring some cheer back in Canadian cricket!
On the downside we still have CC doing what it does best, show incompetence.

Squad:
1 Navneet Dhaliwal - Captain RHB/RMF Ontario
2 Abraash Khan RHB/RMF Ontario
3 Dilon Heyliger RMF/RHB Ontario
4 Hamza Tariq WK/BAT Alberta
5 Jeremy Gordon RMF Ontario
6 Junaid Siddiqui RLG Ontario
7 Nicholas Kirton LHB/ROS Ontario
8 Nikhil Dutta ROS/RHB Ontario
9 Nitish Kumar RHB/ROS Ontario
10 Ravinderpal Singh RHB British Columbia
11 Rizwan Cheema RHB Ontario
12 Rodrigo Thomas LHB Ontario
13 Romesh Eranga LMF Alberta
14 Saad Zafar LOS/LHB Ontario
15 Srimantha Wijeyeratne WK/BAT Ontario

Kirton was identified as Canadian-qualified on a tour to Barbados in 2017. He played for Canada in the 2018 WCL2 and in 2018 GT20. He was also part of the Combined Campuses and Colleges team that won the CWI Super 50 last year. He has had mixed success but at only 21 can still improve.

The squad is not far off what would be expected. It will take a new level of play and consistency from the team to qualify. I hope they are up to it. Unfortunately, while most teams (even newcomer Nigeria) have been playing warm-up matches, there is no word of anything for Canada beyond what was provided by the ICC.

Thanks for the info in Kirton. Did not know much about him. Looks like a good selection for future. Good to have a young Canada qualified player.
The squad is good, but always has to play two opponents. Their own adminstration and the opponents on the field!
It will be a tough competition as most teams are of equal strength. Oman is surprising everyone now as they have regularly started beating even Scotland and Ireland. Cant forget that Scots beat England in the recent past! And Ire could have won the Lords test..
Really looking forward to the tournament..and our bits doing well. I am optimistic.

Competent job by Canada to see of the challenge of Jersey. Jersey were not one of the fancied sides but were nonetheless playing well up to this match.

Canada spread the load around with Gordon and Heyliger taking 3 wickets each and several batsmen contributing. Kumar showing another dimension to his game scoring 83 off only 36 balls. A fine start to the tournament.

Good start. Jersey is one of those teams that are not fancied, but quite decent. Nigeria should be comfortable, although it is cricket...
Looking ahead, I think our boys are better than UAE, especially with UAE being without Shaiman and Naveed. IRE will be hard, and although Oman is highly rated, I have a feeling we have a better team than Oman. Time will tell. We should be able to beat HK too.
This is all on paper though :D

Part of the reason I question batting first is I thought someone might carry his bat but I guess not.

Canadian batting making tough work of the weakest opponent they are likely to face this tournament. Some big bloughs will be needed to make a decent total. And the bowling will have to have a big day.
