Canada @ 2019 ICC T20 World Cup Qualifier

Post by ray » Fri Aug 23, 2019 8:02 am

Canada and Bermuda advance from the Americas region to the global qualifier held in UAE October 11-November 3, 2019.

There are fourteen teams participating suggesting a preliminary round consisting of 2 groups of seven from which four teams advance to a second round. The qualifier has six berths available to the [Edit: 1st round] 2020 ICC T20 World Cup.

Canada has fared poorly overall in the T20 format, finishing last in their group in the 2015 qualifier. However, with Zimbabwe and Nepal out and the experience of GT20 behind them, Canada has a good shot at making the 2nd round.

Nepal and Singapore are preparing for the global qualifier with a tri series with Zimbabwe. I wonder what Canada will do to prepare closer to the time?

^ Nepal are not part of the T20 WC Qualifier, having been knocked out by Singapore in the Asian regional T20s.

As Bertus de Jong's graphic (https://twitter.com/BdJcricket/status/1 ... 2421526531 ) explains, finishing 4th in their group Canada would have to win two consecutive matches to advance to the T20 WC. Whereas, finishing 3rd would provide a chance of a single win doing the job. Anything better would be a bonus, but that much harder to achieve.

If Canada plays to its potential, I dont see why they should win a number of matches. For change they have a team that others will be wary of. Lets hope for the best.
Ravi Singh, Navneet, Cheema, Thomas, Saad all can be destrictive on their day and have decent steady backup in Nitesh and Hamza. Bowling seems well stocked too. Now for the small matter of performing on the day!

Hong Kong, one of Canada's group opponents is suffering a player revolt : https://www.emergingcricket.com/news/ba ... ualifiers/. This comes after their captain and top bat (Anshy Rath) has left in pursuit of the better opportunities in the Indian system. Bad news for that nation means a better chance for Canada at the qualifiers.

Canada appear to be playing 2 warm-up matches before the tournament proper:
https://www.t20worldcup.com/qualifier-fixtures/men
Mon 14 October vs Singapore
Tue 15 October vs Kenya

As a point of comparison, Singapore and Kenya also play our first opponent, Jersey in warm-ups. Meanwhile, fellow Americas side Bermuda play two of our other opponents, Nigeria and Hong Kong.

Interestingly, the warm-ups appear to be awarded by ranking  . The higher ranked side will play warm-ups against each other.
For instance: Scotland vs UAE, Ireland vs Netherlands
Also: Bermuda vs Nigeria, Singapore vs Jersey

That seems strange to have warm ups based on rankings!

I have seen an ad on willow tv for telecast of this tournament. Any news or confirmation? Are we lucky enough to see this live? Would be nice to see all these new teams, rather than India scoring 202-0 vs SA! Nothing new in that match.

Nice podcast with a preview of teams and their chances. Canada seems to be one of the favoured teams to get through based on recent form.
Also the tournament is indeed on TV. About half the matches. Will be very interesting to watch the new teams. It should be very interesting.

Upon reading further, by finishing 4th in their group Canada would have to win a single match to advance from this tournament. Whereas, finishing 2nd or 3rd gives them two shots at advancing. The prospect seems realistic. The issue is that Canada has very little experience in big games at this level and virtually no success in this tournament. The T20 format is one in which we have badly under-performed. It will take something special from Dhaliwal, Cheema, Singh and especially the bowlers to succeed. Wins over Jersey, Nigeria and Hong Kong are their best chance in their group.

Squad is still not announced as of October 8th AM. All we know so far is that Navneet Dhaliwal is the captain from CC Facebook: "Wishing you all the best in Dubai Skipper Navi!". Are they waiting on the availability of one or more players?
