Caribbean Premier League (and Americas Associates)

Post by ray » Thu Mar 01, 2018 1:23 pm

Peter Della Penna live tweeting the 2018 CPL draft indicates the following Associate players have been drafted:

Canada:
x Nikhil Dutta (Barbados Tridents) unfortunately Nikhil's selection was subsequently rejected
Hamza Tariq (Trinbago Knight Riders)

USA:
Jaskaran Malhotra (St Lucia Stars)
Saurabh Netravalkar (Guyana Amazon Warriors)
Elmore Hutchinson (Jamaica Tallawahs)
Ibrahim Khaleel (St Kitts & Nevis Patriots)
Sunny Sohal (Barbados Tridents)
Steven Taylor (Jamaica Tallawahs)

USA got a huge bonus in that only Americas players playing in this years CWI Super 50 or returning to last years squad were eligible to be drafted as each team's designated Americas player. Of course, Canada were in preparations for WCL2 as Super 50 was taking place.

Well, ICC's blatant favoritism for "Team USA" is getting to the point of outrage. Now
they're pressuring CPL to give preference to "Team USA" players over Canucks. So
Taylor gets his $5K and Khaleel, Sohal, etc, get their $3K. Can only ask how
long CC is going to sit by and accept being relegated, step by step, to second class cricket citizenship.

Yes, you're right. It was one thing to help the Americans play catch-up after years of ICC inaction during the Dainty administration's tenure. However, it has gotten out of hand. At some point Cricket Canada, the Bermuda Cricket Board and the rest of the Americas boards have make some noise in protest over ICC favouritism.

Those six places reserved for Americas Associates are essentially paid training - valuable experience for amateurs. Canada and Bermuda should have been on the phone to CWI and the CPL long before the draft to ensure an exemption was in place given that their players did not have a chance to play the 2018 Super 50. They've let their players down.
