3rd match:
Canada 47 all out
Brazil 49/5

Brazil staking claim to #2 womens Associate in the region. It took them just a couple years of their central contract system to surpass Canada. At that rate, they could catch the Americans in a tournament or two. Regardless of the final standings, it must be a wake-up call to Cricket Canada and all their programs.

I see CC puts out a tweet at the start of Canada's games. The past two matches have not gone well so it's been the one tweet and done.

Canucks lose to Brazil by five wickets!!! :o :o Down to number three in
Americas! You'd hope this is finally a wakeup call for CC to now make a BIG
push to recruit mainstream women's talent, which is how Brazil got to where
they are. But.....CC will do N-O-T-H-I-N-G

Congratulations to Brazil, a well deserved win. Canada showed the same flaws as in the US match, inability to rotate strike, poor running between the wickets, and fielding below par. The Brazil batting is weak- that's the only reason this was close but their fielding is exceptional and bowling is decent.

There was a very interesting interview with the president of Cricket Brazil during the match, which gave great background on how Brazil has developed its cricket.
Cricket really only is strong in one city of about 100,000 - but there they have 5000 players, half of them women. The programme was built over10 years by volunteers starting at youth level.
The current squad of 14 or so are all from the local community and are funded as close to full time cricketers. They practice 4-5 hours/ day, including at least 90 minutes fielding practice - reflected in the fielding in this tournament which is a class above this level of cricket.

If Cricket Canada want to build a competitive team, we can learn from Brazil - in many areas we have big advantages, including a large population with a cricket culture, infrastructure and coaching, and this can be a quick process but needs resources...... A simple plan...

- Pick a single geographic location- let's say Brampton -good infrastructure, central, large cricket playing population
- Centralise the women's programme there, and encourage prospective players to re-locate if possible through contracts - let's say $40,000/ year for half time, facilitate education through university and high school connections, funding available to talent identified under 25s who meet fitness standards
- Hire a coach at least half time, plus support fitness and conditioning coaches
- set up year round training programme, train funded players to coach in clubs and schools

This however requires $$
- 15 players @$40,000 = $600,000
- coach @$80,000 - they don't need to a big name, just well qualified to coach the basics and elevate the players up to the next level
Throw in another $200,000 for facility rental, other coaches etc.and you have a bill of $820,000

You still have to fund costs of national and international competition.

Give it three years and you'll have a team that compete- older players and those that can't relocate are not excluded but will have to meet standards and merit selection based on performance...

Unfortunately Cricket Canada has a total budget of not much over $1.1 million, so this isn't going to happen.

Thanks for your thoughts, JS.

I would add that Brazil has some familiarity with a cricket-like game that surely helps when it comes to player skills/recruitment :

However, Brazil is showing the way with their central contracts. Cricket Canada cannot afford this level of support but we can look at more modest initiatives. Starting with a few youth contracts (18-23 year-olds) for men and women is a more realistic goal. These can be flexible to allow for part-time studies and will not have to be funded to the same extent as many still live with their parents.

Cricket Canada needs to change to become more attractive to corporate sponsors. Since the short-lived Scotiabank deal, we have been spectacularly unsuccessful at obtaining funding. There are people in the cricket community that have understanding of what business is looking for and CC will have to ensure they are ticking the boxes to be more successful.

Something has to change. I just hope CC don't just accept the status quo.

Once again (sadly) everyone's missing the point. Brazil got to where they are
because they went big time into recruiting MAINSTREAM Brazilian women. As a result
that one city has a pool of more than 2500 women players. How many women players could you find
among the expat women in Brampton (because right now those are the only women you'd get
for cricket)? You Canucks just don't get it. Still locked in the hopeless mindset of "developing"
expat women. The sad result: in 2012 Canada made 181-3 against Brazil women and beat them by 126 runs.
Nine years on Brazil skittles out Canuck women for 47!

Two years ago, after USA women smoked Canada women and then they themselves were smoked in Europe, there was discussion that USA Cricket had to recruit women collegiate athletes and teach them to play cricket. The idea being that they would be good athletes who could run and throw not just women from countries that play cricket so they’re on the team.

Canada in 2nd place. Saxena again the player of the match! Brazil must have good bowling. They restricted the USA. USA will be playing a 50 over qualifying event very soon. It’ll be interesting to see how they do to give another (do we need one?) indication of where Canada is.

This South African David Weise has pretty much been carrying Namibia...like Davidson once did for
Canucks.
