Canada 2nd match

Post by ray » Fri Sep 21, 2018 12:56 pm

Panama: 42 all out (18.5 ov)
Canada: 43 (4 ov)
Thanks to PDP for the tweets giving the results because the CricInfo scoring broke in the 5th over.
Another 10-wicket win for Canada. They chase a target of 43 in exactly 4 overs v Panama today. Hamza Tariq and Rodrigo Thomas were sent out to open to get some time in the middle. Tariq with 6 boundaries in his 27 not out off 13 balls. Thomas 16* off 11. 3 hours 10 minutes until USA v Belize.

Romesh Eranga is a 33 year-old Sri Lankan who played his last FC and List A matches in his homeland during the 2012-13 season. So he is in the squad to help the bowling attack immediately and in the short term. He won't be a replacement for the 34 year-old Cecil Pervez.

Rodrigo Thomas appears to hail from St. Vincent and the Grenadines and has played in T&DCA since at least 2011. He was a member of the SVG U19s in 2008 so probably around 30 years old.

Canada 3rd Match

Post by ray » Sun Sep 23, 2018 11:36 am

USA: 140/8 (20 ov) + 14 (super over)
Canada: 140/8 (20 ov) + 16 (super over)

It took a "second innings" to separate the two sides. 40 year-old Rizwan Cheema came through with a vital 32 to keep the innings together and hit the last ball six to tie the scores. The win is only important in that gives Canada some positive experience in tight matches. Both sides will have to improve if they hope to compete with the leading Associates. The teams meet again this week and then next in the Americas T20 Qualifier.

Cheema was a fine bowler (at a higher level of play) a few years ago. No longer the case even in T20s?

1500 watching the cricket in Morrisville, NC. They probably felt they were well entertained. We may see more competitions heading that way.

Canada 4th Match

Belize : 32 all out (10.2 ov)
Canada: 33/0 (2.4 ov)

Pleased to see Abraash Khan's senior debut. He makes his mark on the scorecard with bat and ball in another mismatch. Ravinderpal Singh also handed his debut.

USA-Canada match the only redeeming feature of this otherwise farcical
tournament. Bigger crowd than in CPL matches in Lauderhill! Agreed,
both teams need to improve to be competitive with other associates.
Hong Kong, Dutch, Scotland, UAE all getting better.

HA!! After a wretched start (65-6) Team "USA" wins! Two balls left and
Canuck bowler dishes up a slow, full-toss! Real Sunday parks stuff! Neither of these teams gonna go anywhere
in the qualifiers.

I agree neither team will qualify for the T20WC but they should get to the qualifying tournament which will mean funding. I feel CC did not use enough up and comers. There seemed to be a few hundred people there which is good. On to the Super50!

Canada 5th match

Post by ray » Wed Sep 26, 2018 7:50 am

Canada: 173/8 (20 ov)
USA: 174/8 (19.5)

Another very close result. Taylor brings it home for the Americans. The Americas T20 Qualifier should ratchet up the rivalry further.

Will be interesting to see the squad for CWI Super 50. Will Canada tweak the squad that lost a pair of 50 over matches to West Indies B? Those results would indicate they will struggle in that tournament.

Canada 6th match

Post by ray » Thu Sep 27, 2018 7:16 am

Panama: 40 all out (16.4 ov)
Canada: 41/0 (2.1 ov)

Canada conclude their tournament with another easy victory, finishing second to the hosts on net run rate. Canadian bowlers continued to pad their stats against lesser opposition while perhaps mercifully, the batsmen were always chasing and never got to put up a monster score. Indeed they never lost a wicket to a competitor not wearing a USA shirt.

Canada and USA advance to meet again in a more competitive showdown with Bermuda and Caymans involved.

The 2019 Central American Championship (T20) will be played later this month. It features the Panama and Belize squads that were hammered last year by Canada and USA. Perhaps the previous version of the championship was used as the qualifier for the 2018 Americas 'A' qualifier. Perhaps not. The ICC is so bad at promoting its tournaments beyond the first tier that it is hard to know.
