Cricket Canada has released the squad: https://cricketcanada.org/cricket-canad ... -super-5o/
David Jacobs (named captain for the tour)
Nitish Kumar
Cecil Pervez
Dilon Heyliger
Navneet Dhaliwal
Nikhil Dutta
Harsh Thaker
Salman Nazar
Srimantha Wijeyeratne
Varun Sehdev X Bhavindu Adhihetty
Rodrigo Thomas
Romesh Don
Sukhdeep Brar

A replacement for Ravinderpal Singh (withdrew) will be named later. (Ravindu Gunesekera)

Also playing in the tournament is Canada NT pool member, Nicholas Kirton for the Combined Campuses and Colleges team.

A bit of squad rotation going on here. Also perhaps some forced experimentation since It's likely some of those missing players were unable to secure the necessary time away (over 19 days). Going to be a tough go as Americas teams have not historically fared well in this competition.

Edit: Apparently Adhihetty travelled instead of Sehdev and Gunesekera is the replacement for Singh.

Match 1: Canada vs WI B

Post by ray » Wed Oct 03, 2018 5:42 pm

Windies B 302/8
Canada 292/8

Romesh Eranga taking 5 was the bright spot for the Canadian fielding. Honourable mention to Salman Nazar picking up 3 wickets. We'll have to see whether he can repeat the feat in subsequent matches.

Canada did well to make the game close but it always seemed too many runs to chase. The team is giving a number of players a chance so the results may suffer as they determine their best XI.

Match 2: Canada vs Windwards

Post by ray » Fri Oct 05, 2018 2:55 pm

Canada: David Jacobs, Cecil Pervez, Harsh Thaker, Navneet Dhaliwal, Nikhil Dutta, Rodrigo Thomas, Romesh Eranga, Srimantha Wijeyeratne, Salman Nazar, Ruvindu Gunasekera, Nitish Kumar

Windwards: 337/9
Canada: 264 all out (48.1 ov)

Canada with another decent start but they don't have the ability and experience to chase these large scores. The top order can keep their wickets but at the cost of run rate. It the end they have to do better in the bowling to keep the target manageable.
Kumar showed his talent but again failed to push on to his fifty - something he really needs to work on.

Match 3: Canada vs Trinidad & Tobago

Post by ray » Sun Oct 07, 2018 3:02 pm

Canada: DAVID JACOBS *+ , NITISH KUMAR , BHAVINDU ADHIHETTY , CECIL PERVEZ , HARSH THAKER , NAVNEET DHALIWAL , NIKHIL DUTTA , RODRIGO THOMAS , SALMAN NAZAR , SUKHDEEP BRAR , ROMESH DON

Canada: 207/7
T&T Red Force: 208/8 (40.4ov)

The Canadian batting held together reasonable well, but no one broke out for a vital fifty that might have challenged T&T. Dhaliwal seems most likely to put up a decent score and Canada's run rate really dropped when Dhaliwal was dismissed.
MVP Nicholas Pooran was indeed the difference as he brought T&T in sight of the target despite some late fight from Canada.

Match 4: Canada vs Guyana

Post by ray » Tue Oct 09, 2018 5:20 pm

Canada: DAVID JACOBS *+, NITISH KUMAR, BHAVINDU ADHIHETTY, DILON HEYLIGER, HARSH THAKER, NAVNEET DHALIWAL, RODRIGO THOMAS, ROMESH DON, RUVINDU GUNASEKERA, SUKHDEEP BRAR, SALMAN NAZAR

Canada: 202/9 (47 ov)
Guyana: 204/3 (29.4)

Dhaliwal making his case to be a core member of the squad and opener posting 88, the high score for a Canadian so far. Good contribution from Jacobs to rebuild the innings. Nice to see some of the new players getting their chance - it is up to them to seize it.
Despite 3 quick wickets with Guyana's score in the 50s, Canada cannot take another and go down to their first comprehensive defeat at the Super 50.

Match 5: Canada vs Windward Is.

Post by ray » Sat Oct 13, 2018 5:16 pm

Canada: DAVID JACOBS *+ , NITISH KUMAR , BHAVINDU ADHIHETTY , DILON HEYLIGER , NAVNEET DHALIWAL , NIKHIL DUTTA , ROMESH DON , RUVINDU GUNASEKERA , SALMAN NAZAR , SRIMANTHA WIJEYERATNE , SUKHDEEP BRAR

Canada: 206/9
Windwards: 188 all out (49.2 ov)

For the 2nd game running Canada not able to post a big total batting first. Perhaps a mistake to send Dutta (19 from 62 balls) at #5 instead of Jacobs or Wijeyeratne.
Eranga continues as Canada's wicket-taker but he will need support from the other bowlers to break Windwards' partnerships. - Edit: In the end Eranga took 6(!) -leading Canada to a surprising and very welcome victory!

Match 6: Canada vs Guyana

Post by ray » Mon Oct 15, 2018 4:26 pm

Canada: DAVID JACOBS *+ , NITISH KUMAR , BHAVINDU ADHIHETTY , DILON HEYLIGER , HARSH THAKER , NAVNEET DHALIWAL , NIKHIL DUTTA , ROMESH DON , RUVINDU GUNASEKERA , SALMAN NAZAR , SUKHDEEP BRAR

Canada: 205/7
Guyana: 208/6

Somewhat surprising Cecil Pervez, Rodrigo Thomas and Srimatha Wijeyeratne are not playing more. The focus seems to be on giving experience to the youth and newcomers Nazar and Brar.
Canada having trouble scoring against spin throughout the tournament - with the exception of Dhaliwal. Strange decision to put in Heyliger before Jacobs. Canada has work to do to figure out how to bat to win. At times winning did not look like the goal today.

It seems that all of the batsmen have a low strike rate. Maybe the game plan is to bat 50 overs? They are going to have a low total to defend.. Kumar out for 51. Well batted. A really stellar catch.

Match abandoned.

A bad situation in T&T and an unfortunate end to Canada's tournament. Nevertheless, some positives emerged:

The Americans were right that having national team of Associate(s) involved in Super 50 instead of “Americas” team led to more competitive outcomes. Some wins and several close matches this time for Canada/USA versus zero wins for Americas team. In any case, some of the other teams were soundly beaten (Jamaica bowled out for 82 by CCC students) so Canada and USA have already shown they are up to the standard of this tournament.

The Super 50 has been very helpful to clarify some things for the Canada selectors. Navneet Dhaliwal and Romesh Eranga have seen their stocks rise. Both have surely locked up contracts in next summer’s Global T20 and CPL if they care to sign. Eranga is that badly-needed asset of a wicket-taking bowler to partner with Cecil Pervez. Dhaliwal’s consistency as an opener in the tournament likely has secured him that position for him in WCL2. Davy Jacobs did enough to show he can keep the scoreboard ticking in the middle overs.

Unfortunately, other gaps in the line-up remain unclear. An opening partner for Dhaliwal has not emerged. Should Canada go with Wiejeyeratne, Gunasekera or Rodrigo Thomas? Who will be the third pace bowler: Heyliger, Brar, Dhindsa? Who is the second choice spinner after Dutta: Nazar or Siddiqi? Where do Saad bin Zafar and Hamza Tariq fit into the 50 over side?
