2018 CC Summer Festival

Post by ray » Tue Aug 28, 2018 9:13 pm

As mentioned on the main website, the festival is underway featuring a full Canada side, Canada A, West Indies 'B' and Toronto Bears, made of overseas pros playing in Toronto. With 2 Canadian sides this tournament will provide the seniors some games to gel as a team, high level match experience for youth and a chance for selectors to see who is up to the standard. This experience was all too rare in the past. Hope CC can continue to provide it going forward.

Canada: Nitish Kumar, Cecil Pervez, David Jacobs, Dilon Heyliger, Hamza Tariq, Jeremy Gordon, Junaid Siddiqui, Navneet Dhaliwal, Nicholas Kirton, Nikhil Dutta, Rizwan Cheema, Saad Zafar, Satsimranjit Dhindsa, Srimantha Wijeyeratne.
Notable absentee: Ravindu Gunasekera

Canada A: Abraash Khan, Aran Pathmanathan, Arslan Khan, Bhavindu Adhihetty, Gurinder Thandi, Harsh Thaker, Jean Paul Rocke, Kanwar Mann, Ketan Kaushal, Kevin Singh, Pranav Sharma, Ravinderpal Singh, Romesh Don, Sukhdeep Brar

Money is being spent to deliver the on-line stream. CBC is providing a very high quality stream. CC have brought in some experienced commentators - including two of the guys who did the GT20 commentary. They also have Canadian womens player, Monali Patel on the commentary team. It's a big improvement from around five years ago when they had a only one guy doing the play-by-play - which was very boring.

It would be very interesting to see the streaming numbers for the weekend. Also good to know who is watching - cricket fans or curious sport fans. The stream commentary caters to the more knowledgeable end of the spectrum. If this effort is geared to making cricket more accessible to a wider population, they need to include some content for new cricket viewers.

I've just noticed that at least four players from "Windies B" are in the WI test team for the tour to India. Canada played them close.

Did CC pay CBC to stream the games? If so, any idea what they paid?
And would indeed like to know the ratings info, i.e., how many watched
and who was watching.

I doubt CC had to pay CBC to stream the event. It falls within the broadcaster's mandate to show sport involving Canadians or even just Canadian-based teams. It may have been CBC testing the viewership to gauge whether cricket's numbers make sense for the medium. I hope they saw enough to interest them in further events - maybe picking up some matches from the next Global T20 for the Canadian market.

Apparently there are a couple of 50 over matches between Canada and WI B to conclude CricketFest. Disappointing no schedule was posted on the CC website. That still leaves much to be desired. However, CricketFest itself has been a useful, if not well-attended event. Hope to see it back next year.

West Indies “B” will then continue their tour of Canada with two 50-over games against the Canadian National Side also at King City on September 5 and 7.
