Cricket Canada has opened player registration for the 2019 tournament: https://cricketcanada.org/gt20-player-r ... ions-2019/

Interestingly, a list of ICC Approved/Disapproved leagues on the CC site does not yet show 2019 GT20 Canada : https://cricketcanada.org/icc-approved- ... ed-events/.

Scheduling of the 2019 tournament may be even more of a challenge than the last one. The Cricket World Cup (May 30 - July 14) will occupy the window in which the GT20 Canada was played last year. ICC would likely enforce a ban on approved tournaments going opposite their showcase event. Regardless, the attention of the prospective audience, domestically and abroad, will be focused on the games in England and Wales.

Starting after the CWC puts the GT20 into the failing light of mid-July evenings meaning the organizers will have to go with floodlights. Later starting times may even work better for local spectators. Then the scheduling of the Caribbean Premier League will come into play. If the timing is to be similar to the 2018 CPL, the GT20's window would be very tight.

When you have $10.5 million to lose annually, anything is possible!

The announcement of the GT20 trials and annual contracts represents an outlay of $720K (18 players x $40K average/player). Big boost for CC in addition to the $500K+ operating fee they already receive.

https://cricketcanada.org/gt20-canada-t ... uncements/
"Players will qualify for daily per diems as per the normal established rate while on tour for Cricket Canada, and during GT20 games plus any other related training tours out of Canada."
The wording in the announcement suggests the contracted players would receive a standard salary and not get additional money for participating in the GT20. But I could be wrong on that. Either way the investment indicates there will be substantially more Canadian content in the GT20 for 2019.

I like that Toronto (far and away the major centre of Canadian cricket) is being set up as the hub of Cricket excellence. Hopefully, the top young players are attracted to the GTA to establish the best standard possible going forward. However, any relocating players will want to know that Mercuri will be back for many more seasons to come. Indeed all CC's new programs are dependent on Mercuri's ability to sustain losses and eventually attract audiences. All the eggs are in the one basket.

July 26th - August 11th announced as the dates of the 2019 Global T20 Canada according to the sixth edition of the "Wickets" magazine.

It implies the 2019 Caribbean Premier League will start later than in 2018. It also shows organizers are wisely scheduling to avoid a clash with the Cricket World Cup. With the fading light of mid-summer, games may be able to go later into the evenings since they will almost 100% need lighting.

Nothing announced yet on their website (www.gt20.ca). Anyone check if those
dates have been booked at King City?

Cricketeurope reporting that the European T20 league to be organized by Mercuri is a go.
Since the dates for the Global T20 have not been confirmed hope that doesn't mean
Mercuri is going to abandon Canada for greener pastures in Europe. Also have to assume
Mercuri has put in a bid for this USA T20. Are they thinking of combing the two
competitions? Or going with the states and chucking Canada?

Should be interesting to compare Global T20 Canada and Mercuri's European venture this year. Who will have more spectators in the stands overall and what Full Member players will the 2 tournaments manage to attract ? Canada have to work around a single out-of-the-way venue while the European competition has additional costs of setting up 6 venues and flying teams around.

As I mentioned before, tying in Canadian and US T20 tournaments makes good sense (for Mercuri) from the perspective of scheduling, attracting top pros, and economy of scale. That is only IF one has a centralized US location (New York) for the US teams like for Global T20 Canada.

I thought Mercuri had a 25 year agreement with Cricket Canada worth about $500K a year to the board. Unless they have an out clause, I would think they have to pay ~$12 million to exit Canada. It is a sum Mercuri can certainly afford if they want to bail but no reason to think they are leaving just yet. The sums Mercuri are willing to spend (lose) to expand their T20 brand globally boggles the mind. Hope they will see a return somewhere.

If Mercuri is awarded the USA T20, and they set it up like Canada,
playing all matches at single location, that $10M they loss north of
the border will become a $20M loss playing at Lauderhill.

^ Quite likely, but how much would Mercuri or any bidder lose by setting up a bunch of cricket pitches around the US and carting the teams around the country for a couple of weeks? A whole lot more than $20M by my guess. I think they should spend the money on building one venue around New York/New Jersey.

Mercuri (if they bid on UST20 and were chosen) could fold the Toronto operation into a bigger competition operating 2 venues (T.O. and NY/NJ) with 8 teams (4 based in NY, 3 based in Toronto + CWI B team). That probably provides the best way to lose the least money. It would be up to Mercuri to make their money on the overseas TV market if such a thing is possible.
