Cricket Ireland Chief Executive, Warren Deutrom:
“We firmly believe in the concept of a T20 franchise competition across the three nations and continue to work towards the goal of bringing the event to fruition. In 2019, we made a prudent decision to enforce a postponement of the tournament in order to give the organisers and funders of the competition the best chance of delivering on a successful inaugural season in 2020. We still believe this was the right course of action for the good of the players, suppliers, funders and the three governing bodies involved.”

“We are still in discussions with our Scottish and Dutch partners, as well as the organisers, and have identified a gap in our playing schedule in 2020 that suits all three nations. However, as per 2019, we shall only proceed if we’re comfortable the event has a sustainable future. There is always risk involved in getting new ventures off the ground, but we shall continue to work hard to put in place a model that can deliver a sustainable event cricket-wise and financially. We want this to work, we believe it’s a strong idea, we just need to be sure the foundations for it are strong.”
The tone of the statement makes it seem that EuroT20 Slam is unlikely for 2020 and possibly ever. Given the poor decision-making displayed by Bombay Sports and resulting huge losses, this may be the best for the immediate survival of their other property, Global T20 Canada.

With the postponement of the Everest Premier League (Nepal) due to COVID-19 precautions, the organizers of other franchise T20 tournaments like GT20 must be getting concerned. Even the mighty IPL has to keep a close watch on events. If there are further delays or postponements, the already small GT20 window could be squeezed down as the result of re-scheduled bigger tournaments.

No official announcement yet, but I think we can assume no GlobalT20 this year.

While a 2020 GT20 might not be possible or indeed advisable, the tournament is in the favourable position of being single-venue and not relying on local fans.

Perhaps it could be a Canadian only tournament with players from all over the country.

Yes, the tournament would probably rely on more Canadians this year than anticipated but would still require a significant amount of foreign content. It would have to get a few of the "icon" players and some second-tier stars as well. All this to satisfy the overseas viewership on which the GT20 model is based. Perhaps they might do a smaller version with 4 teams instead of 6.

It might never come to pass but I'm sure the organizers are going over all kinds of scenarios and alternatives.

Won't come off this year...and maybe not at all.

Two-thirds through June and it doesn't seem Southern Ontario will open up quickly enough to play a 2020 edition of the GT20. Any advancement of the Brampton stadium will have to wait another year.

Have to agree with some of Eddie Norfolk's sentiments in the article: http://www.canadacricket.com/?p=13307 . Great little tournament but Cricket Canada is not taking advantage, not promoting its own product.

On a different note, who would have guessed Canadian cricket's own GT20 would have been ahead of the curve for the "short tournament, single venue, no fans" model of sports :) !! Expect this model to become more prevalent if pro sport survives at all. COVID-19 may pass, global warming will not.
