Canada @ 2019 ICC Americas U19 Qualifier

Post by ray » Thu May 30, 2019 7:28 am

  • Canada host
  • 5 teams
  • Dates: July 8-14
Unlike the last few tournaments, this will be more than a 3-team affair. This time it will be a single round-robin featuring Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Argentina, USA and the hosts. Venue most probably King City. Winner qualifies for 2020 ICC U19 World Cup in South Africa.

Canada's matches:
July 8 vs Bermuda
July 9 vs Argentina
July 11 vs Cayman Is.
July 14 vs USA

Canada squad:
Ashtan Deosammy (Captain)
Akhil Kumar
Arshdeep Dhaliwal
Ayush Verma
Benjamin Caliitz
Eshan Sensarma
Gurjot Gosal
Matthew Nandu
Muhammad Kamal
Nicholas Manohar
Randhir Sandhu
Raqib Shamsudeen
Rishiv Joshi
Udaybir Walia

Looks as though 8 of the squad represented Canada at the CWI U19 tournament in 2018. Joshi is the lone member from last year's U19 World Cup.

Sounds like Eddie Norfolk needs to brush up on his hindi! Also, perhaps, his spanish (Argentina reference). It's not only here. I checked out the websites and FB and Twitter of the other teams in this tournament and, other than squad announcements from a few weeks ago, there is nothing about this tournament.

Canada off to a good start against Bermuda although the Bermudians do look good in their fuchsia shirts.

USA making quick work of Caymans (29 all out)

Oh dear. As expected, the Argentines not faring any better than the Bermudians. Another mismatch on the cards.
Argentina 33 all out (21ov) -8 ducks, 4 wickets falling in final over and 6 in last two overs
Canada 39/3 (4ov)

Bad habits beginning to creep into the Canadian batting after bowling out their opposition cheaply?

I'm not sure of the exact format of this tournament but if it's a single round robin then NRR won't enter into it. The winner of the Canada/USA game will be 4-0 and the loser will be 3-1 (unless they tie). I feel the players shouldn't try to win as quickly as possible. They should play solid cricket shots and win in 6 overs instead of 4. At least there were five batsmen for Canada today so that guys can get in the middle so they're more settled for the big USA game.

^ True. Canada might do well to bat first if they win the toss in then match against Cayman Islands. Regardless, both USA and Canada will likely face each other without many of their batmen having faced strong (or any) bowling in a pressure match all week. Could make for some bad decisions.
