ICC favorite son/daughter (yet again)

Post by timmyj » Thu Mar 01, 2018 11:09 am

Well, following fast on the free pass ICC gave USA women's team for
the WC qualifier in Scotland, they're now sending the team on a full tour
to Australia. Now understand there's probably no more than a hundred
women or so in the USA who play cricket on a competitive level. The ICC
has done nothing to expand that number, nothing to recruit new women
to the game. But they continue to spend big $$$ on this same group of
players who have shown they're just not internationally competitive. :? :o :(

The ICC just seem to be spending money on showy things like tours, not on the extremely difficult task of increasing the numbers of women playing the game. The US will probably have to look to some schoolgirl sides to find Aussies at their level. They could have stayed much closer to home and played some West Indies girls but this was not high profile enough for the ICC. The only real value in this is being able to say the USA toured Australia.

Meanwhile Cricket Canada has no plan or money to help our women. Most of their energy this year will be focused on the Global T20 Canada which is looking dodgy at best.

USAcricket has put out the list of clubs/players eligible to vote
in their upcoming election. All total: about 8,000 voters and this
includes a rather suspiciously high number of "coaches, administrators, and
umpires." We've always been told there are at least 20K active
cricketers in the states. So, on the basis of these numbers, either there isn't nearly
as much cricket in the states as
we've been led to believe or over half the USA cricket community
isn't even bothering to get involved in this new organization.

^ Most likely a case of both:
-Numbers have been exaggerated (seems to have been done in several associate countries over the years).
-Many (most?) North American cricketers only care about their weekend leagues or their country of birth and not at all for a national governing body

So plenty of work for USA Cricket to do to capture the interest of their true potential membership. Canada = same.

Hmmm ... more strings being pulled.

Referring to Della Penna's story on the 2nd Americas sub-regional T20 Qualifier: http://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/ ... -cup-doubt

Bertus de Jong:
@BdJcricket
This from PDP has shot under the radar a bit, but this is a pretty incredible precedent. The ICC has literally rescheduled a Qualifying tournament specifically so that the USA could field a full strength team without pulling players out of the CPL.
Peter Della Penna:
‏@PeterDellaPenna
Not just that @BdJcricket. I was subsequently told by an ICC official that WCL Division Three was originally penciled in for October but that it was pushed back to November 7 so USA could compete in the Cricket West Indies Regional Super50 competition that runs through October.

Blatant favoratetism for sure, but won't make much difference with the T20 Qualifier since
just a formality for USA/Canucks to advance. More troubling is the WC D3 qualifier since team
"USA" will come to the tourney straight from some good quality competition, which I assume
the other countries won't have. If team "USA" advances to D2 bet my last dollar ICC will have (or move) that
tourney to the USA under the most favorable arrangements for the home team. Heck, why
doesn't ICC just give 'em a free pass to the WC!

As a promo gimmick, ICC will be sending the ICC World Cup trophy on
a world-wide tour to 21 countries. The trophy will come to USA but
(surprise, surprise!) NOT Canada!

ICC has recently come out with world rankings for womens T20 cricket.
46 countries, but USA and Canada not even listed! Maybe they haven't played
enough matches to qualify. But did Peru, Chile, Belgium and Swaziland, all of
whom are ranked???

^ Yes, saw that as well.
The South American teams (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru) qualified for the rankings (minimum 6 T20 matches over 3 or 4 years? ) by having played in their own South American tournament. Would be interested to know whether those women payed their own way or whether funds came out of each country's ICC funding.

Of course, only one team in the Americas was allowed to compete for a spot in the Women's T20 World Cup. Perhaps mercifully, the USA still failed to make the ranking despite being gifted four T20s (2 were rained off) as part of the qualifier. I'm sure both CC and Cricket USA would prefer to avoid the embarrassment/questions involving their women's team sitting tied for joint 43rd place on zero points.

Still unclear when either North American side will see action again. Certainly there is little mention of their respective women's national team from either board.
