Winnipeg women going places in cricket (Winnipeg Sun)

Put your hand up if you knew the Canadian women’s cricket team was playing in the ICC America’s Division 1 Championships in the Cayman Islands this week. Keep that hand up if you knew two of the team’s players are from Winnipeg. If your hand is still up, congratulations. You know your cricket.
Didn’t raise your hand once? You’re probably not alone.
It’s just that cricket doesn’t have the following in Canada that it does elsewhere in the world. That’s something Winnipeg’s Vijayani Vithanage has learned since migrating to Canada when she was 15.
“It’s the No. 1 sport in Sri Lanka,” said Vithanage, who’s on her first tour with the national team. “Sri Lanka is one of the top three nations in the world which plays cricket. We follow it like a religion back home.”
