Jamaica Under19’s scored 136 for three wickets (35.3 overs) in response to ICC Americas 135 for nine wickets (50 overs) on Monday (August 27th) in the West Indies Under-19 Regional One-Day Championships. Jamaica’s seven wicket win lifted the Jamaicans into second place in the standings, behind Guyana U19’s, on a day when the Windward Islands beat host Barbados by 75 runs and Guyana beat the Leeward Islands by five wickets.
Seam bowler Kijana Johnson took four wickets for 31 runs as Jamaica gained an early advantage against ICC Americas. Canada’s Akash Shah, who scored 30, and USA’s Salman Ahmad, who made 28, provided the major stand for the Americas seventh wicket. ICC Americas stood at 84 for six after 24 overs.
Jamaica’s opening bats Kerry Holness and Oshane Walters posted 48 runs without loss in 11 overs. Holness went on to score 31. Aldaine Thomas scored 35 and Tristan Coleman was 35 not out when the win was completed in the 36th over.
ICC Americas play Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday, the last day of the tournament.
Guyana bowled out the Leeward Islands for 94 (28.4 overs) then scored 97 for five wickets (22.2 overs) to win by five wickets. Guyana has now completed six matches and sits out the last round of games on Wednesday.
Barbados bowled out the Windward Islands for 227 (49.4 overs) at Kensington Oval but replied with just 152 all out (38.2 overs). So the Windward Islands won by 75 runs. The Barbados innings included a major contrast between opener Shai Hope scoring burst of 26 runs in facing seven balls just before ten overs had been completed, and Windwards’ off-spinner Kenneth Dember bowling six overs for just five runs to cut down the scoring rate. Five of those overs were maidens. Hope ended battling away to score 74 and was ninth man out, but it was the Windward Islanders who won the day.
Summary standings released early on Monday evening by the WICB provide points and the number of matches played: Guyana 34.0 points (6 matches); Jamaica 25.5 pts (5 matches); Windward Islands 24.5 pts (5 matches); Barbados 19.5 pts (5 matches); Trinidad & Tobago 11.5 pts (5 matches); ICC Americas 11.5 pts (5 matches); Leeward Islands 7.0 pts (5 matches).
Thanks to the WICB Media department for scoring updates and early scoring summaries of completed matches.
Finally, some may have noticed that I flipped the Queen’s Park Oval from Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, to Barbados in my preview of this tournament. Barbados really did play at the Kensington Oval today, site of the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup final, and the opening game of the CLICO Under-15 tournament between the West Indies Under-15’s and Malaysia four years ago. And Barbados opening game of this Under-19 tournament was at the Barbados Queen’s Park ground against the ICC Americas, and not at the Kensington Oval.
Perhaps I was temporarily lost in a 2008 time warp when I bounced from seeing Canada’s women in Trinidad then popped up to Barbados to see the opening game of ICC America’s in the CLICO against Kenya. After that game, played on a Sunday (West Indies-Malaysia was on the Saturday) it was back to Trinidad for a day or so.
Some of the logistics in obtaining and distributing scoring information in a timely and reasonably accurate manner can certainly be interesting. Not to mention issues on finding some of the grounds.
