In the field behind Featherston Drive Public School, there’s an unusual new addition — a bright green, brand new cricket pitch.
It’s the first of its kind at a school in Ottawa, and one of just a handful in the city.
The pitch officially opened in May, but students have been playing cricket at the Alta Vista-area school for much longer.
About three years ago, teacher Nick Janna noticed some students weren’t interested in the sports usually being played at recess, so he decided to bring out his cricket bat and wickets.
“Seeing the reaction on the faces of students who knew cricket much better than I did was unbelievable,” Janna said. “There were students that flocked over right away.”
