2016 Durham Elementary Co-Ed Cricket Challenge

The 2016 Durham Elementary Co-Ed Cricket Challenge is the fourth indoor cricket tournament for elementary schools operating within Ontario’s Durham District School Board. Games are being played at the Whitby Soccer Dome and the 2016 challenge has a record 76 teams participating from 44 schools in the main event.
The first tournament had ten teams from seven schools. So, clearly the event has expanded significantly in just four years. Indeed, new this year was a junior competition those in Grades 4- 6. Eight teams from eight schools played in the junior competition.

A Potted View of Play and Tournament Structure
Each team has ten players and each game is due to comprise ten overs per team. The pitch is half of one soccer field; the Whitby Soccer Dome has two soccer fields, so four games are played at a time. Each player bats for one over and each of the fielding side is to bowl one over. There is only one batter at a time and the bowler has the potential attraction of bowling at a double set of stumps.
Three runs are deducted for a maximum of three dismissals (“outs”) in an over. If the ball is struck beyond certain markers on the boundaries of the field then 2, 4 or 6 runs are scored. The batter is required to make an attempt to hit each ball, and can also score runs by running to a marker on either side of the wicket.
A time allowance of 30 minutes exists for each game, so the action is fast paced and the teams then move to on to the next game or sit out a round of games. The preliminary round of matches, played in groups, is based on a modified round-robin approach.
Each team in a preliminary group of eight plays three games. All teams in each group then compete in the first playoff round, the quarter-finals. The quarter-final winners advance to the semi-finals, and the winning semi-finalists reach the day’s final.
In order to ensure each day’s play is completed within the available time it is sometimes necessary to reduce the number of overs in a game if play slips behind the basic schedule.
Colonel Farewell wins Junior Championship
Colonel Farewell (71 runs) beat Village Union (61 runs) in Wednesday’s final (November 23, 2016). Queen Elizabeth Public School had won all 3 games in the qualifying pool but lost to the eighth placed school, Fallingbrook, in the opening round of the playoffs. Fallingbrook scored 68 in the playoff to overcome Queen Elizabeth’s 36.
Eight teams will contest the main Co-Ed Cricket Challenge playoffs on Monday (November 28, 2016). Thursday’s (November 24, 2016) playoffs were still in progress when I left the Whitby Soccer Dome. A round-up of the playoff winners and losers will follow in due course.
Organization and Support
The tournament is organized by Don Laita and Nauman Vania of Queen Elizabeth Public School.
