There was an attempt to play a 14 over match but damp conditions led to its abandonment. The selectors will now try to put together a high performance T-20 squad from their observations on the first two days. Overall the tournament was low scoring, with the strongest batting performances coming from established national team players- Rizwan Cheema scored 154 runs in four innings (2 not outs) at his usual high strike rate. Srimantha Wijeyeratne also topped 100 runs. All matches were played on natural turf wickets, and this represented a challenge for players who do not regularly play on them. The pitches definitely favoured spin, and there was no shortage of aspiring spin bowlers who generally performed well. Amongst less familiar names were Arun Nag of Nova Scotia, Amrinder Dhillon of Manitoba (both left arm orthodox) and leg spinner Jaganpreet Singh. Alberta’s Sukhdeep Brar took 7 wickets with his pace bowling, and Ravinder Paul Singh also had success.

The selectors of course will consider more than just runs and wickets, with fitness and fielding being a major consideration. The competition certainly did allow the opportunity for players from all over Canada to have the opportunity to test their abilities at the highest level, and it is to be hoped it will fare better than the National Cricket League of a few years ago, and become a regular occurrence.

The four matches planned on the final day of the National T20 could not be played due to heavy overnight rain.
