The park is north of downtown, a brief 15 minute walk across the Bow River, and the cricket grounds were readily apparent – the small – very small- 2nd ground, and the full size ground just beside it. The weather was cool, not really cricket weather, but I was pleased to see a game underway. Canasia were playing United in a 20-20 match and a quick glance at the scoreboard showed that United were struggling chasing just 77, with three wickets down for under 20. I was only able to stay an hour but enjoyed some entertaining cricket, as a good partnership resulted in an easy win for United. A young man going by the name of Akki played a classy innings, with some sensible batting interspersed with some big sixes- one of them way over the long on boundary by the pavilion. The game was played in an excellent spirit, and the artificial wicket allowed the batsmen to play their shots. The ground is in a superb setting, with the downtown skyscrapers in clear view, but surrounded by attractive parkland. The outfield grass was perhaps a bit long – a perennial problem in this public park – but it was a pleasure to spend a rather chilly hour watching this great game being played with such obvious joy and enthusiasm. The nets were occupied by three young boys, and the teams to play the next game were warming up as I left. Based on the professionalism of the warm-ups, this next encounter between Caviliers and the Stallions (an under 19 squad) was going to be a good one, but the combination of the weather (spitting with rain) and another engagement meant I could not stay to watch.

Whilst in Calgary for meetings this week I had the opportunity to drop into Riley Park on Sunday afternoon to pay my respects to one of the oldest grounds in the country.
