\nCricket has been a feature of the two-day Guyana Independence festivities for the past 14 years.
\nSeveral former Guyana Test players have made guest appearances, including Basil Butcher, Lance Gibbs, Leonard Baichan, Clyde Butts, Joe Solomon, Colin Croft, Clive Lloyd and the late Roy Fredericks and current Test cricketers Travis Dowlin and Narsingh Deonarine.
\nThe celebrity players participation has dwindled in the past few years and, for the first time, cricketers did not travel from Guyana or other parts of the world for last Sunday’s event at L’Amoreaux Community Centre.
\nThis however did not detract from the entertainment and the presence of Guyana’s president Bharrat Jagdeo and West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan who is receiving medical treatment here.
\nFour teams – a Toronto & District Cricket Association XI, Kaieteur Cricket Club of Waterloo, Commonwealth and a Scarborough Select team – took part in the Twenty\/20 affair.
\nLed by a game-high 40 by national all-rounder Abdool Samad, the TDCA team easily disposed of Commonwealth by 92 runs in a one-sided final. The TDCA scored 126 in 19.5 overs and routed Commonwealth for 34 in the 15th over. Ian Baldeo and Kevin Murray each took two wickets.
\nCommonwealth advanced to the final with a 24-run win over Scarborough while the TDCA, spearheaded by Samad who took 3-7 off four overs, defeated Kaieteur by six wickets in the other semi-final. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
