Nova Scotia powered to 288 for six wickets in 40 overs, then bowled out the developing Prince Edward Island side for 65 runs. PEI’s scoring rate was quite good at a run a ball, but wickets were lost at an even quicker rate and the innings lasted just 10.5 overs at Tea Hill Park, Stratford, PEI on Saturday August 18th.
Nova Scotia will host the second place team in the standings in a playoff final at The Commons, Halifax on Saturday September 1st. Second place will be decided this coming weekend as New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island will meet at Tea Hill Park on Saturday and Sunday, August 25th and August 26th. The washed-out match originally scheduled as New Brunswick’s home game in Fredericton two weeks ago is, effectively, being played on Sunday in PEI.

Shiv Sidhu made 46 from 32 balls (4×4’s ;4 x 6’s) in an opening stand of 69 for Nova Scotia’s first wicket against PEI, at which point he fell leg-before wicket to Ross Dwyer. Fellow opener Shyreas Dhond then added 64 runs for the second wicket with Tyson Joyce, before Dhond was caught for 44. His runs came from 43 balls and included seven fours.
Shohag Mortoza had Nova Scotia captain Hari Raghuraman caught for seven, then bowled David Campbell for 2, before ending the innings of Tyson Joyce when he had posted 36 runs on the board. Joyce had hit four boundaries and his runs came from 54 balls. Joyce was lbw two balls after Campbell, leaving Nova Scotia 163 for five wickets after 23.4 overs. Mortoza then bowled Matt Webb for 7 in his next over to leave the visitors on 171 for six wickets.
Yash Gugle took over with the bat, striking eleven fours and three sixes in blazing to 89 not out from 52 balls in the remaining overs. He had support from Matt Lane who tallied 22 not out from 39 balls as the pair added 117 runs from 14.3 overs.
Shohag Mortoza took his four wickets at a cost of 33 runs from eight overs. Opening bowler Kense Philip bowled seven overs for 41 runs. Ross Dwyer took one wicket for 34 from five overs and Joy Ahmed’s one wicket was a touch expensive as he conceded 28 runs in two overs. But the restoration of cricket on PEI is in the development phase at present, so hopefully the playing experience gained or re-gained from this match will serve the players well in the future.
Matt Webb removed both Cyril Roy and Anit Puttaswamy for golden ducks in the opening over, which put more pressure on the batting side. Opener Vishruth Kapoor struck 15 runs from 13 balls, incuding three boundaries, before being bowled by Vivek Reddy in the fourth over. Anoop Thomas, batting at number four, made 18 runs from 19 balls before being bowled by Gowthaman Vijayan in the tenth over with 61 runs on the scoreboard. He was the ninth wicket to fall, having seen Jithu James, the only other PEI batsman to reach double figures, leg-before wicket to Matt Webb for 13 runs, at which point PEI had lost six wickets for 54 runs.
Kense Philip was bowled by Shailendra Rao for one to bring the PEI innings to an end at 65 all out from 10.5 overs.
Vivek Reddy took three wickets for 35 from four overs, and fellow opening bowler Matt Webb took three wickets for 35 from four overs. Shailendra Rao took two wickets for six runs from 1.5 overs and Gowthaman Vijayan took one wicket for two runs in the one over he bowled.
So Nova Scotia, who have sponsorship from AIL Satti, await the outcome of the two games between New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island before knowing which side will be the opposition in the Maritimes 40-over championship final on September 1st.
The efforts of these three provincial cricketing bodies to work together in staging this Maritimes 40-over competition should be highly commended. Thanks also to Matt Lane of the Nova Scotia Cricket Association for providing scoring details from last weekend’s game at Tea Hill Park.

Nova Scotia beat Prince Edward Island by a hefty 223 runs to complete four wins from four matches in the round-robin phase of the 2012 Maritimes 40-over championship.
