News from the world of the ICC Full Member countries activities are also mentioned in this round-up.

Ron Fanfair wrote in “Share” (Feb 13) about Toronto Cricket Club’s invitation to play in a series of 40-over games against an American Midwest Conference side in Phoenix, Arizona in early March. The games have been arranged by the American Cricket Federation (ACF), whose Chief Executive, Jamie Harrison, is delighted Toronto CC have agreed to participate. The Midwest Conference won last year’s ACF Twenty/20 National Championship in Florida.

The previous issue of “Share” (Feb 6) included a feature about the Canadian Junior team’s participation in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in the UAE. It included a focus on young seam bowler Keenen Tinto that is well worth a read.
I gather that Tinto’s ability was noticed by Henry Osinde and then former Canadian National Coach Gus Logie during games played by Caribbean Limers. Logie’s departure from Cricket Canada had been reported in a previous edition of “Share”.

“IndoCaribbean World” (Feb 5) reported how Scotland and the UAE had grabbed the last 2015 ICC World Cup berths at the ICC World Cup Qualifier in New Zealand. Canada’s “disappointing performance” in this Qualifier was not mentioned in “IndoCaribbean World” was front and centre in the “South Asian Focus” headline “Canada loses ODI status” (Feb 13). Ravin Moorthy, president of Cricket Canada, indicated a concern to reporter Nouman Khalil that any hit from reduced ICC funding “will hamper our ability to continue to have a full-time men’s (national) team.”

However, Moorthy expected programs to continue and bring growth in grass-roots cricket, and believes Canada continues to be an important commercial market for cricket.

“Caribbean Times International” (Feb 13) featured news that Hemnarine Chattergoon, who has played for Guyana and Canada, was recently elected as president of the Canadian Softball Cricket Association (CSCA). Chattergoon had been CSCA vice-president for the past two years and hopes for continued success following 20 teams involvement in 2013.

“The cricket season (is) very short in Canada, but it was wonderful to see the large number of players coming and playing on a regular basis, ” according to Chattergoon. He plans to be in Guyana for the annual Guyana Cup softball mini-world cup, a competition run by the Guyana Softball Floodlights Association. Sunshine Cricket Club won the CSCA championship in a year that seemed to see too much rain when Canada’s senior and junior national teams played in the Greater Toronto Area.

CanAsian Times (Feb 15) included an article about Indian international Yuvraj Singh’s involvement in a campaign to raise awareness and improve education and make about cancer. The “YouWeCan” campaign hopes to reduce people’s fears of meeting and associating with those suffering from cancer, as well as enourage the seeking of early detection and, as needed, treatment of cancer.
Yuvraj Singh gained mentions as one of five players who gained million dollar contracts on the opening day of Indian Premier League (IPL) auction in Bangalore. The other four were Dinesh Karthik, Kevin Pietersen, Glen Maxwell and Mitchell Johnson.

The IPL auction was covered in “India Journal” (Feb 14), and “the Weekly Times of India” (Feb 14) included a major article about the IPL selections. The IPL auction featured on the cover page of “The Weekly Voice” (Feb 15).

The possibility of the IPL being shifted, possibly to South Africa where it was played in 2009, was raised in both “India Journal” and the “South Asian Observer” (Feb 14).

“CanIndia News” (Feb 14) devoted space to the winter Olympics but included news of India’s T20 squads for the Asia Cup and the ICC World T20. Both competitions are to be played in Bangladesh. Yuvraj Singh returns to the Indian squad for the World T20.

Elsewhere, “The Contact” (Feb 11) was looking to India to “Learn from this defeat, Guys!” after “a dramatic 40-run defeat” in the first test against New Zealand at Eden Park.

India’s 4-0 ODI series loss to New Zealand had been reported in Indo Caribbean World (Feb 5) along with Australia smashing England to clinch the T20 series 2-0 after handing out a 5-0 Ashes test and a 4-1 ODI series triumph. News that England coach Andy Flower had stepped down might not be surprising in light of that tour. Sri Lankan off-spinner Dilruwan Perera’s 5-109 in the first test win against Bangladesh gained attention. It was only his second test, although three Sri Lankan batsmen hit a century or higher in the game.

Guyana’s loss to Jamaica in the NAGICO Super50 that was played in Trinidad gained the cricket space in “Toronto Caribbean” (Feb 12). Guyana lost by 10 runs after Nkrumah Bonner slammed 122 not out for Jamaica. Shrivnarine Chanderpaul lead the Guyanese response with 65.

Somewhere in the mission to pick up a few newspapers and see the news of the cricket scene through different perspectives, I seemed to notice a preview of the Canadian juniors trip to the ICC U19 World Cup in the “Caribbean Camera”but the copy seems to have disappeared.

Meanwhile a letter to the editor in “The Weekly Voice” (Feb 13) indicates disagreement with several of Mike Kendall’s recent thoughts about the state of Canadian cricket, some of which had appeared a week or so ealier in “The Weekly Voice”. The letter indicates a need to “bring in the right administrators and right coaching along with funding and infrastructure.”

So a non-scientific sampling from newspapers was still available on a quick visit to the Dundas Street and Hurontario intersection on Tuesday morning, A trip that ended when I decided it did not seem as warm (by recent standards) as it was supposed to be.

Eddie Norfolk

The Canadian cricket news content from the latest selection of newspapers included one mention about Canada’s loss of ODI status at the senior level, a couple of previews about the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup that continues in the UAE until the end of next week, a story about Toronto Cricket Club’s participation in some […]

[3
