The suspension makes Cecil Pervez, Durrand Sorraine, Junaid Siddiqui, Rustam Bhatti, Zameer Zahir and Khusroo Wadia ineligible to represent Ontario or play in any member league of OCA. The situation escalated when Cricket Canada, over some disputes, didn’t allow OCA to field its team and instead national selectors pitched a new Ontario Rep-IX. Soon after the inaugural match, OCA decided to take legal action against Cricket Canada and issued show-cause notices to players.
Later, OCA suspended six players after they didn’t respond within five days of receiving the show cause notices, whereas the matter of suing Cricket Canada is still in process and its outcome will surface soon. “During the suspension period, these players will not be allowed to represent OCA anywhere in the world neither they can play in any of its member leagues,” Gulwant Bajwa, 1st Vice President of OCA, told Focus.

OCA’s official team has recently played a two-match series against Georgia in Atlanta and will soon send its players to Dubai for ICC’s high performance training camp with former test players Mudassar Nazar and Rodney Marsh.

Meanwhile, a further clash is expected as Toronto and District Cricket Association (T&DCA), the biggest league of Ontario, has rejected its provincial governing body’s judgment and decided to support the suspended players.

“The charges against the players are baseless,” said Mohammad Sheikh, president of T&DCA. “Fifteen players have played in the tournament, but OCA suspended only six – this is unfair.

“We didn’t, Cricket Canada selected them for the championship. Why should we punish them for Cricket Canada’s actions?

“They are and will be playing in T&D matches and we are fully supporting them,” said Sheikh.

As things stand, T&D is technically a member of OCA, not of Cricket Canada.

However, Bajwa informed that OCA has an agreement with the leagues that if a player is suspended from one league, other leagues should respect the decision and must not allow him to play.

He said the players have a right to appeal against the suspensions.

By NOUMAN KHALIL The Ontario Cricket Association suspended six players for failing to respond to a show-cause notice questioning an explanation for their conduct in the recently concluded National Cricket Championships.
