The winning school cricket team in each section will advance as 2014 Mississauga City Champions, and as such the city’s CIBC Trophy Holders, to the Greater Toronto Area finals on May 31, 2014 at Brampton’s Dixie-Sandalwood Park, the site of the Brampton Soccer Centre.

The participating schools in the Mississauga CIBC Trophy division of the the Girls High School championship are Father Michael Goetz, T.L. Kennedy Secondary School and St. Joseph. Last year Father Michael Goetz won the Mississauga Division and went on to capture the inaugural Greater Toronto Area Girls High School 2013 CIBC Trophy with a 12 run win against Toronto champions York Memorial.

The 2014 Greater Toronto Area Girls High School championship will again involve the winners of the Toronto and Mississauga championships in the absence of particpating girls teams from Brampton and Markham. York Memorial have again qualified as the Toronto representative after reversing a round-robin defeat against West Humber Institute in the Toronto championship playoff.

The Boys Middle Schools CIBC Trophy participants in the first CIMA Middle Schools outdoor championship in Mississauga are Bristol Road Middle School, Erin Centre Middle School and Tomken Road Middle School.

J.S. Woodsworth Middle School won the Toronto Middle Schools division of the 2014 CIBC Trophy last Friday, thanks to a 6 run win against Smithfield Middle School at Sunnbrook Park. The inaugural Brampton Middle School CIBC Trophy is due to be decided by a game between Beryl Ford Public School and Cheyne Middle School on May 27, 2014 at Dixie-Sandalwood Park (aka Brampton Soccer Centre).

Boys High School Championships in this 2014 CIMA/CIBC School Cricket Championship are scheduled for Mississauga schools on Tuesday (May 20), for Markham Schools on Thursday (May 22) and for Brampton schools in just over a week (Tuesday May 27). The complete schedule is not yet displayed for the Markham division on the CIMA Canada website.
If there are any changes to the scheduled dates we will endeavour to advise such information via Canada Cricket Online as well as the outcome of the various phases of the CIMA/CIBC 2014 Greater Toronto Area School Cricket tournament.

The playing schedules (“fixtures”), school team playing rosters, results and standings for the CIMA Mayor’s School Cricket Tournament for the CIBC Trophy 2014 can be seen at http://www.cima.mayorscricket.com.

It should be recognized that in order to post the scorecards for each game in this tournament the names of the playing squads need to be input. There is a separate game summary scoring sheet that is used to provide the basic results from each game. Generally, the team lists, scoring summaries and scorecards are input to the tournament’s computer system after the scorers get home from a day’s play.

The facilities at the average park where cricket is played in Canada do not match those at the world’s leading grounds where international cricket is played by the leading ICC Full Member countries. A fact that should not be a great surprise to many, but it does mean that if there is any interruption in play due to rain, the opportunity is typically not available for scorers and helpers to input data online to the CIMA Canada CIBC Trophy records.

The priority for scorers and helpers – as well as players and umpires – might be trying to find some cover from the rain and, when the wind blows strongly, the scores may be battling to ensure the various sheets with players names and any loose manual scoresheets do not blow away!

One brave soul last week tore the scoresheets from a completed game and attempted to type up the scorecards on a computer during gaps between matches. Such initiative can lead to progress, but it can lead to some frustration as issues of battery power and connectivity between different gadgets so data can be transmitted to a host computer in parts unknown emerge in moving from the era of the quill pen and carrier pigeon, possibly supplemented by a town crier, to a different wireless age.

The good relations built by volunteers within CIMA Canada with the Toronto Parks Department resulted in Friday’s Toronto playoff games being played on the north ground at Sunnybrook Park, which was in good condition. This ground was used in 2001 to host some of the matches in the ICC Trophy and was also used to host an ICC Intercontinental Cup 3-day first class match between Canada and Bermuda. A grass wicket had been established for the ICC Trophy, and was restored for use in the Intercontinental Cup game.

During recent clean-up activities at home I came across photocopies of the scoresheets from the opening game of the CLICO Under-15 international championship game between the West Indies and Malaysia that was played at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

During the interval between innings, I inquired at an admininstrative office about the possibility of obtaining copies of the scoresheet for the West Indies innings (who had batted first, Kraigg Brathwaite, who has progressed to the senior West Indies side, scored quite a few runs). After the game had ended, someone kindly provided photocopies of the scoresheets for both innings, which were on large size paper with ball-by-ball detail.

But such office support and facilities are not readily available at the average Canadian cricket ground, based on my experience. Taking photos of scorecards and team lists provides the best alternative, but when the camera battery runs out…..reporting news can be delayed.

Let’s hope for good weather in the remaining phases of the 2014 CIMA/CIBC tournament.
