Cecil Pervez and Junaid Siddiqui each picked up two wickets
in the early going, although Siddiqui “gained” a wicket after missing a catch off a skied chance
when Pervez was bowling. As the fifth wicket stand progressed, both batsmen seemed to find
time to move around the crease and position themselves to steer the ball into gaps in the field or
power the ball to or beyond the boundary.
Ruvindu Gunasekera struck a solid boundary then edged the ball to the keeper when the Canada
XI batted. Rizwan Cheema and Srimantha Wijeyratne attacked the bowling. Cheema’s innings
ended when he skied the ball into the wide mid-on area and one of two fielders attempting the
catch managed to cling to the ball after they collided. Both fielders left the game; one had the
webbing of one hand stitched and the other has a fractured collarbone.
Wijeyratne went on to top-score with 33, Navi Dhaliwal followed his morning 76* with 19,
Babar looked useful scoring 27 and Harsh Thaker made 17. Cecil Pervez batted at number ten
for the Canada XI in this innings after opening the bowling for Toronto.
In a summer that has seen few Elite games start in the Toronto District Cricket Association, these
games provide a chance for various Toronto area members of Canada’s squad to play before
July’s ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier, an event where Canada begins with qualifying group
matches in Scotland.
