\nInternational cricket superstar Ramnaresh \u201cRonnie\u201d Sarwan has announced his endorsement of the Canadian Inter University College Championship set to take place September 14-17, 2010 at King City,Ontario.
\nThe winning University\/College will take home the \u201cSarwan Trophy \u201c. Sarwan is the youngest West Indies batsman to reach 5,000 runs in Tests, with his highest Test score being 291.
\nHe is currently in South Africa, as Captain of the Guyana team competing in the Champions League Twenty20 2010.
\nYork University, Champions of the 2010 American College Cricket Championship, will join Waterloo, two sides from the University of Toronto (Scarborough and St. George campuses), Ryerson, University of the Ontario Institute of Technology, Brock University, McMaster University, Queen\u2019s University, Sheridan College, the University of Manitoba and McGill University to compete for the Sarwan Trophy.

Cricket Canada\u2019s First Vice President Ravin Moorthy said

Universities have a burgeoning number of elite players and this is just another way of creating avenues for players to get an education and play cricket at the same time. We have seen major universities provide recognition for cricket as official team sports and this auger well for the development of this avenue of the game. Winning the Chanderpaul Trophy (American College Cricket Championship) brought mainstream media attention such as the Globe and Mail to the York University cricket club which is further evidence of the popularity of the sport. Mahjuj Sourav, the tournament organizer has been instrumental in getting this project off the ground and we are pleased to support in any way that we can to make this event an annual success.\u201d<\/p>\n
American College Cricket President Lloyd Jodah said

We saw a lot of talent on the York University team when they came to Florida, and we are happy to see their participation in the American College Cricket Championship bear fruit, in the form of a Canadian collegiate championship.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tournament organizer Mahjuj Sourav was excited on the eve of the tournament saying
\n\u201cOn behalf of the Canadian University and College Students playing cricket in various leagues, we are proud to finally get University and College level cricket organized. We have had University and College students and Alumni representing the national and Under 19 teams; and it is about time all these talent we have in the Education system be recognized by their institutions. This will be one of our major steps towards getting the sport associated with Varsity sports, where students will get scholarships and state of the art facilities to improve themselves\u201d<\/p>\n
