The pen is mightier than the sword - but I only have a keyboard

The letter from England which criticized the management of the Canada vs West Indies ‘A’ international match raised significant issues about the operational aspect of ‘our’ game.

I have been criticized for being too critical of the critically ailing Canadian Cricket Association. It has even been suggested a couple of times by my critics that my recklessness is precipitating the destruction of a venerable Canadian institution.

The operative word here is institution. An institution is designed to be resilient. It is intended to an instrument of continuity so that no matter the acts of the individual, the institution will outlast the inept and misguided use of power. Government is the most obvious example of an institution. In our particular little corner of the cricket world the Canadian Cricket Association is supposed to be that instrument of governance. Power can be used for good or bad. Power can be used wisely or foolishly. In my opinion power has been used foolishly and perhaps recklessly in the governance of our game.

The Canadian Cricket Association has foolishly decided to try to circumvent the due process of continuity. That process gave a voice to cricketers through the local elections of various constituent Associations and Leagues across Canada. That voice, for the coming year, has been arbitrarily taken away.

By the sophisticated manoeuvre of setting the annual meeting of the CCA to predate the meetings of local Associations and Leagues your vote for change will be rendered useless. What are you going to do? What can you do? What are you willing to do? That is up to you. I believe in the good common sense and collective wisdom of the ordinary Joe Canada cricketer. If you believe that this is wrong, and will be detrimental to your game, start doing something about the welfare of your game.
