Global T20 Canada 2020
Re: Global T20 Canada 2020
I’m watching the Ireland Zimbabwe test and England WI highlights! Anyway, when the GT20 draft happened I thought there didn’t seem to be as many Canadians as I thought there were supposed to be to have mostly Canadians in the playing XI.
Re: Global T20 Canada 2020
Listening to the GT20 commentary, they confirmed that a minimum 3 Canadians were required per side. However, for the July 27th matches I'm at pains to see the 3rd Canadian for Knights (Thaker, Gordon) in the first match of the day and Wolves (Johnson, Akhil Kumar) in the second. What is going on ? Am I missing something or has Cricket Canada stopped enforcing the rules.
Re: Global T20 Canada 2020
I suddenly thought ‘Wait a minute! Isn’t the GT20 started?” And indeed it has. Some notables -
Dilpreet Bajwa with scores of 100*, 33, 41*
Movva 41
Thaker 79*
Kirton 74
Saad with five wickets
Sana and Gordon with two
Bhagwan and Heyliger with one
These players have played more games of course.
Curtis Campher played. He was just in the Ire/Zim test!

I’ve browsed some highlights. They’re cut, I posit, to slide by the fact that there are very few spectators. There look to be be dozens in covered seating and almost no one in any bleachers. There are some billboards advertising. Also highlight videos on YouTube with 100k views.
Re: Global T20 Canada 2020
Wondering when the Canadians, Dutch and Americans participating in League 2 series in the Netherlands will leave the GT20. There is a two day gap starting August 6th after the last of the preliminary round matches. The playoffs will see considerably changed lineups - maybe several Canadians with one or no games under their belts this season. It will not be a good look for the tournament but there was not much that could be done given the scheduling of League 2 and other T20 tournaments.
Re: Global T20 Canada 2024
2024 tournament is ending on a low note. Weather caused the Qualifier playoff match to be lost and seriously affected the Eliminator match. It seems the Bangla Tigers refused to play a hastily-arranged super over resulting in Toronto Nationals being awarded the win. The details are provided here:

This after the GT20 playoffs were already compromised with many Canadian players, some top performers for their teams, leaving for international duty in the Netherlands. The circumstances of the playoffs have not lent to the credibility of this year's tournament.
On the field there were some good performances. Dilpreet Bajwa was the GT20's 2nd leading scorer, had the 2nd best run average and scored the tournament's only century.
However, it was in at least one sense a step backwards for Canadians. The number of Canadians on the field was dropped to minimum of two. Overall, 29 Canadians made 104 appearances in 19 completed matches (5.47 Canadians per match, down >1 appearance per match compared to 2023). By allowing this, Cricket Canada has failed to look out for their own players.

Certainly sounds farcical. And the worst fears of many have come true - a one over game!

This Norm Da Costa article provides some information on national team player salaries and costs involved in the GT20:
Among the leading sponsors are TD Bank, Nissan and Gatorade, who chip in between $500,000-$800,000 US, Singh said.
The top Canadians earn around $40,000 and that is a huge bonus as their contract with Canada Cricket only earns them roughly $30,000 a season.
https://torontosun.com/sports/other-spo ... re-to-stayThe cost of setting up the stadium with temporary stands that can sit some 5,000 fans and hiring some 100 locals comes up to $4.5 million per season, Singh added.
Re: Global T20 Canada 2020
If it costs $4.5 mil to just erect the stadium the event's bleeding
lots a red ink every year....just like MLC.
