Consolation round
Canada vs. Ireland
Ireland 179 all out 43.3 overs
Canada 85 all out 29.2 overs

Good test for Canada in what could be an important match for the winner. The bowling starts well with 3 early wickets but must continue to put Ireland under pressure to keep the target within reach.
Canada have a good day in the field restricting favoured Ireland to 179. The bowlers shared the wickets with Gibson providing the early breakthroughs in their most successful day to date. The target is definitely makeable but will require multiple batsmen to contribute.
Unfortunately, an atrocious start of 31/4 has all but ended Canada's chances.
Canada no match for Ireland today, wasting a good performance by the bowlers. The entire top order failed, unable to cope with the Irish attack.

11 berths in the next U19 World Cup are available and now Ireland remain in contention for one of those. Canada will only play for pride to close out the tournament.

Now 76-8....

I see Canucks only beating PNG or Uganda.

The West Indies U19s are in the unusual position of having to play the consolation round of the youth WC. The next group of Americas Associate U19s will be hoping there is no shocking upset (vs PNG) lest the West Indies be forced to qualify from the region for 2024. That would mean both Canada and USA would miss out.
Update: West Indies post 300+ total with M. Nandu of Guyana via Canada putting up 128. Victory all but assured. A further win against UAE and ICC USA, err ... ICC Americas can breathe a sigh of relief.

Speaking of automatic qualifications, perennial automatic qualifier, New Zealand surrendered their spot in this U19 tournament because of domestic Covid restrictions they would face upon return. Will they be forced to qualify from the East-Asia Pacific, meaning no Associate representation from that region? I wouldn't be surprised if NZ are given a pass because of "exceptional circumstances". The NZ board has almost certainly lobbied for such an outcome.

In 2016, Australia withdrew from the tournament but at that time Full Members were still given an automatic berth so their spot was always assured in the 2018 U19 World Cup.

The United Arab Emirates has just won the Plate competition (9th place), beating Full Members West Indies and Ireland in the process. A suitable model for Canada to emulate?

Similar to Canada, the UAE youth sides also seem to heavily draw on the children of the expat community. They don't have large numbers of youth cricketers yet are regular qualifiers from Asia. The differences would be considerably larger funding and having a cricket academy.

Canada's inability to set up an academy to support the development of U19s and then U19 graduates in the transition to the senior national team is chief among the reasons for our past decade of stagnation. With the necessity of fielding an U19 womens cricket, a training centre will be all the more needed.

The issue after having an academy is drawing on players from outside Toronto. We also need more high performance type games domestically. There is currently one weekend a year for games between AB and BC u19s.

It’s been a very interesting tournament from an Associate point of view. UAE’s performance leaves them with the Plate championship, only the 2nd for an Associate after Afghanistan. Uganda’s strong finish saw them grab 13th place ahead of Scotland. Unfortunately, the Covid outbreak within the team meant Canada were unable to test themselves against other Associates.

The tournament’s effect on Associates does not end there. From the start, New Zealand’s withdrawal looks to pose problems for the ICC and its East Asia/Pacific Associates. On the face of it, NZ will to have to qualify for 2024 leaving the region without Associate representation. The same fate has befallen Africa (Zimbabwe finish 12th) and West Indies’ poor tournament nearly cost the Americas Associates. On the other hand, the top ten placings of UAE and Ireland mean that an extra Asian and a European Associate will qualify. The choice of host for the next U19 World Cup could also determine whether West Indies has to play a qualifier. Will the ICC intervene (interfere) in some way? Interesting times.

Canada had tough tournament with only a few bright spots. Their always limited preparations were further affected by Covid restrictions. They lost their warm-ups and their four tournament matches before the virus prematurely ended their tournament.

The standout Canadian was definitely Anoop Chima. His consistency as an opener was evidence of why he was in the Derbyshire system as a 16 year old. All the players need the type of environment that will challenge them to spur further development – Chima especially.

Another Canadian product of note was Matthew Nandu. He and his West Indies team had a poor tournament. Nandu scored a century in the Plate playoff round but only managed 23 runs in his other five innings. Nevertheless, to be name captain of WI U19 shows the confidence placed in him by team staff based on past accomplishments. No doubt he will get his chance in the West Indies professional system. If he excels he may get a shot at the full West Indies team. It is more likely that Canada is in his international cricket future at some point.
