Canada in Global Qualifier A, Group 2 :
Feb 18 Canada vs xxBahrain (now corrected to Phillipines)
Feb 19 Canada vs Oman
Feb 21 Canada vs Nepal

Feb 22 Semi-finals - crossover with Group 1 (Ireland, UAE, Germany, Phillipines)
Semi-final winners advance to T20 WC

Given Canada's historic weakness in the T20 format, poor standard over the last decade and lack of competition, they will be hard-pressed to make a semi-final.

Hmm...any wonder why sugar daddy ICC put the apple of their eye "Team USA" in the clearly weaker
qualifying group? ;) ;)

Cricket Europe is reporting a T20 Quadrangular ahead of the 1st T20 WC Global Qualifier featuring Ireland, UAE, Oman and Nepal. So two of our group opponents will get practice matches. Will there be warm-up matches before the tournament proper?

Beating a dead horse and all that but who is in the team going to this tournament and what preparations are happening? When are they leaving?

Canada names squad: https://cricketcanada.org/news-single?nid=195
Navneet Dhaliwal (Captain)
Dilon Heyliger
Rishiv Joshi
Jatinder Matharu
Shreyas Moova
Salman Nazar
Rayyan Pathan
Kaleem Sana
Junaid Siddiqui
Ravinderpal Singh
Matthew Spoors
Hamza Tariq
Harsh Thakkar
Saad Zafar
  • The core of the squad is unchanged from the Americas T20 tournament in the fall.
  • Spoors is apparently a former Australia U19 all-rounder playing in a South Australia league.
  • Good to see former Canada U19 Joshi getting more experience
  • Should we be getting worried that Nitish Kumar and Nikil Dutta are not part of a 2nd straight tournament? Kumar was Canada's top scorer at the 2019 ICC T20 WC Qualifier and Dutta played all 6 matches.
  • Two warm-up matches against Germany are scheduled

live in Canada. :?: :?: :?:

From the Germany cricket twitter

Cricket Germany@Cricket_Germany·17hGermany reached 144-7 in our 20 overs. Canada knocked them off in the 16th over for loss of 3 wickets. This was a warm up game and not a T20i.

Not getting many updates from Oman but Germany are 55-1 after 6 overs in the warm up match versus Canada

Also from German cricket twitter:
"Second warm up again against Canada and we are fielding after losing the toss"
"Canada finish on 173-7 after their 20 overs"
"Germany 96-6 after 15 overs"
"132 all out in last over"

I keep repeating myself, but ... Cricket Canada want people to be interested in this team but can't be bothered to provide any details of these two warm-ups. Yes, they are only warm-ups but many will be unfamiliar with the players. To get people invested, Cricket Canada needs to provide news because we play so infrequently.
