Cricket Canada HP League

Initial details of the high performance league have been released:
https://cricketcanada.org/news-single?nid=213

2 BC, 2 Alberta, and 3 Ontario squads
6 matches/team played regionally
Later a double round robin national tournament featuring 3 selected provincial squads and a national squad
13 players for each team of which 3 will be U25s and 2 will be U19s.

This is a positive move that could help development of young players if done properly. It is called a "pilot" program, implying more teams and perhaps more matches in future years. It actually sounds like a variation of and idea batted around on the old forum many years ago. It just confirms it was a good idea then that needed implementing much sooner.

Great! I’m so excited to see that it’s 50 overs. I have questions. Are there any sponsors? It seems that the player pool won’t be whittled down much for the national tournament. How do players from the prairies or maritimes get a look in? They’ll have to really advocate for themselves. It’s important that stakeholders and anyone interested in Canadian cricket watch the streams. A few dozen views won’t be good enough.

^ I expect we'll see an expansion in the number of participating provinces if/when funds permit. The prairies could be a challenge given the distances involved.

Given the long-term failure to land sponsors, I am not optimistic CC know how to attract sponsorship. They could start by ensuring lots of information is available to fans about League matches and the national team players/young stars involved.

This development (pardon the pun), though a step forward, represents only 6 matches regionally. Unless players are practicing and training at a high level several times a week, the HP League can only do so much. It is really a poor man's cricket academy/development program.

The schedule is out for these games on FB. To me it’s clear as mud. A few are happening before the WC series at the end of July. I’m not sure this is great preparation. Perhaps it’s a semblance of a pathway?

The inaugural match of HP League is apparently tomorrow (June 11th) featuring the two BC teams. Alberta starts a week later. Yet there is no information on the squads from Cricket Canada or the provincial board sites that I could see. CC released the HP schedule but omitted Ontario. It seems details of the streaming will be delivered last minute as well. It is as though this league came together last minute has not been well organized. Tomorrow will be telling.

BC HP schedule:
June 11
July 10
July 17
July 24
Aug 05
Aug 14

AB HP schedule:
June 18
Jun 25
July 02
July 09
July 16
July 23

There was an FB post from Cricket BC about “trials” for mainland players a couple of weeks ago. I asked “ Trials for what?” and no one ever answered that.

There should also be follow up coverage of these games. Who took the most wickets etc. It’ll be frustrating if we can’t find any information about results.

Cricket Canada has released a scorecard through their Cricket Canada app. A stream for the first match was provided with a single fixed camera and no commentary. The two BC teams were almost indistinguishable wearing strangely similar uniforms. However, at least the league is underway.

The initial release of the HP League schedule on indicated "The schedule for the ‘National High Performance League’ is out now". With no further details forthcoming does this indicate there will be no Ontario league this year?
