The National Championship 50 overs HP was scheduled for Sept. 11-17. Any news? On the CC app the Ontario competition is “past” with only two games played. Weather? Shame the games weren’t made up somehow.

^ There was definitely something "off" with the Ontario HP League from the start. It's schedule was not announced with those of the other two leagues, started almost 2 months later and was not completed - all with no explanation. It seems the organizers decided to abandon the effort, cutting the announced schedule short as soon as each side had played a pair of matches.

I recall a post many years ago about the concept of a high performance league on a previous incarnation of this forum. The poster (apparently a former T&D cricketer said such a venture wouldn't have the support of most top Toronto players as they widely preferred the challenge of playing the top division of their local league). It would not surprise me if this partly explains what happened in Ontario.

A rethink may be in order for next year. I still think the HP League could benefit young players. Could it be targeted at U23 players and played mid-week? If best-on-best cricket cannot be organized in the heart of Canada's largest population, we might as well resign ourselves to tier 2 Associate cricket. We just won't be able to keep up with those nations that can organize tournaments for their elite players.

The "National 50 over Championship" with the top players from the 3 HP Leagues has become the "High Performance Championship" with the nondescript Canada Select, President's XI and Canada U25. Two all-star matches follow.

We hope some new talent emerges from this exercise and they get opportunities to climb the development ladder.

Looking forward to who is in this tournament. Late September could obviously have weather related issues.

The dates overlap with the Flower City T20? What’s up with that tournament?

National 50 over Championship no longer clashing with Flower City T20. The latter now starts October 3rd. Brrrrrr, chilly.

Update:
More info from CC Facebook -
After the Tournament, we we will announce the 16 Members Squad for Malaysia and 15 Members as our Development Squad.
The development squad *could* be a big step forward. It depends - How will the players be developed ? Will they tour, play matches ? Have to wonder whether this is coach Dassanayake's doing.

Teams are out for the National HP Championship. Dutta is in! Kirton is not. Most Canada guys seem to be there so it actually is High Performance.

Interesting, as always to see the names revealed. One hopes the new coach was watching and evaluating these players and had input to the final selection. Of course, not everyone can make the list and there are probably absences due to work/school.

Of note:
. Srimantha Wijeratne seems to have un-retired to be included.
. As mentioned, Nikhil Dutta's appearance is significant, as is Nitish Kumar's continued absence. I believe both have been playing in Toronto the last few weeks.
. Matthew Spoors and Nick Kirton may not be available. Otherwise, they had probably done enough at the last round of Challenge League to be included.
. The U25 names Kirsten Khallicharan and Abhijai Mansingh bear striking resemblance to West Indian players : https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/kir ... ran-914461, https://www.espncricinfo.com/player/abh ... ngh-914561 . If it were the case, I've no idea what the Canadian connection would be.

Weather will seriously affect the National HP Championship this week. CC Facebook shows the schedule has already been adjusted to start a day later but rain is still expected for Tuesday. Organizers may have to play T20s or cancel the 2nd round (with the "All Star" teams) altogether. Unfortunately, rain and wet outfields must be anticipated this late in the season.

The team for Malaysia (Challenge League) is already decided in the minds of the selectors, pending injury/availability. However, the reduced opportunities this week may affect the selections for the promised development squad.
