Participating in the 2022 South American championship was overall a good use of resources. There seemed little else available this year to Canada's women to play international cricket and gain ICC T20 ranking points. The large competitive gap between Canada and a Peru is a problem going forward but benefits like playing away from home and having matches against the quality of Brazil will help the team improve. This year's competition being hosted by Brazil gave Canada the chance for an additional pair practice matches. That may not always be the case.

Assuming there is money for the women to travel next year, what are the alternatives? Facing West Indian opposition would offer much stronger competition - perhaps too strong for where Canada are now. Matches against a T&T or Jamaica would also not be WT20Is. A better alternative would be to play a series against the States. But would the Americans see Canada as a useful challenge or helping a direct rival ? Travelling to Europe or Asia seems too expensive to justify for a team at Canada's level. Continuing with the South American championship appears to be the best option if it is again offered for 2023.

Edit: I read on Wikipedia that Canada's matches in the tournament did not have WT20I status - not sure why. That is the case, the advantage of continued participation in the South American championship is diminished.

Yeah, CC could blow what money they have sending the same mediocre women here
and there in second rate tournies....or they could spend the money
breaking out of the expat bubble world and recruit talented softball players
and javelin throwers.

Canada has gained some respect in this tournament. Hopefully they will get opportunities from this like some sort of tri-series or maybe an Americas qualifier. The USA u19 women toured the WI so maybe Canada can get something like that. The way forward for the Canada Women’s program is to have a domestic pathway ie regional and national tournaments. Also a development pathway. This tournament also had a u15 and u19 girls tournament so the ICC will either need a different excuse to give a berth to the USA or there will be a qualifier so there needs to be a girls HP type of pathway.
I think it would be easier and quicker to travel to Europe than Rio.
I never thought of the USA not wanting to play Canada because it helps us. Cynical but…

The ICC Womens T20 rankings came out following the 2022 SAWC. It confirms Canada games did not count toward the rankings. As expected, Brazil and Argentina gained points and Peru is now officially on the board with a zero rating, having played the minimum number of matches to qualify.

It's fair to say there isn't any ICC regulation barring Canada's matches being accorded full status, so the likely reason is one or more of the South American countries made it a condition of Canada's invitation that their matches did not count as Womens T20Is. As things turned out Brazil would be the biggest beneficiary of such a stipulation.

Canada will have to find other means of increasing their ranking (since the ICC is known to use rankings to determine certain tournament qualification) without relying entirely on ICC-run tournaments.
