Canada @ 2023 ICC Americas U19 Qualifier

Post by ray » Thu Feb 02, 2023 1:13 pm

Host: Canada
Dates: August 11 - 17, 2023
Teams: Argentina, Bermuda, Canada, Suriname, USA

Teams will vie for Americas berth in 2024 U19 World Cup in Sri Lanka. DId ICC Americas arbitrarily decide Suriname should take Cayman Islands' place from 2019?

Old boy, cricket's always been on shaky ground in Caymans and
Surinam, certainly at the U-19 level. My guess is there's just not
enough cricket interest in the Caymans to put up a team. Look at
Bermuda. They've never even been able to field a women's team!

Only one country will advance from the qualifier. Will make
things interesting.

Czarsportz reporting that Suriname have withdrawn from the Americas U19 qualifier. What is wrong with that cricket board ?
Also reported is that Canada and USA U19s will play practice matches prior to start of tournament. This is a bit unusual as they will compete for a single berth in the ICC U19 WC.

Thanks for the info, Czarsportz:

It’s not easy finding any schedule but Wikipedia has one at least. Canada plays Argentina, USA, Bermuda, Argentina, Bermuda, USA. I hope there are some highlights somewhere.

Canada open with an easy romp over Argentina. Fortunately, Argentina opted to field first, lengthening the match considerably and giving Canada's batting and Argentina's bowling some form of preparation for matches ahead.

Meanwhile the USA/Bermuda encounter appears to have suffered a late start due to a damp outfield (again) at Maple Leaf. This is confirmed by roving reporter, PdP : https://www.facebook.com/photo?fbid=770 ... 0940037741

Given past experience at King City, it is a little surprising the ICC awarded Canada hosting rights knowing our reliance on that ground and that it is an ongoing liability. Will anything be done in time for CWC League 2 matches Canada might host next year ? Would the ICC consider removing Canada's hosting rights for that tournament or perhaps push back Canada's home matches until the latter rounds ?

Canada took a fine victory against a strong American side. The Canadians batted deep to just make the target. It should give them a bit of confidence going forward.
