great new cricket book

Post by timmyj51 » Tue Feb 28, 2023 11:16 am

Finally got my copy of Tom Melville's new book, This Too Was America: Philadelphia's Era of Cricket.
(McFarland). Terrific work! Well written, incredibly well researched, full of original insights, powerful and
persuasive. It's very "academic," highly analytic with lots of footnotes which will probably deter a lot of
readers. Too bad, since it's certainly not pedantic. His explanation of the significance of the USA-Canada
cricket series for the development of sports in North America is alone worth the price of the book. After reading it
can't but be left with the realization cricket in North America's facing the exact same problems it faced
150 years ago. My nominee for Wisden's cricket book of the year award.
