The BCMCL, ie Greater Vancouver league, has started an IOM(?) High Performance Program with the stated goal to have "High performance games between best BCMCL players to develop our young talent to compete at higher level." As well, Cricket BC held trials, a practice and two games, to select the BC team for the Western Canada T20. Also, beginning next year, all top division teams must have a junior team. It would be very good to have this sort of 'best practices' emulated across the country.

IOM seems to stand for "Isle of Mann Property Group".

Anyway, could be a promising initiative. Hoping we'll start to see more BC and Alberta representation in the national teams.

^ This appears to be another commercial venture. Seems more sizzle than actual steak but if some Americas players (at least 2 Canadians seem to have signed up for the draft) can earn some money, so be it. I don't know that any actual development will take place.

I'll say it again, Canada need an U23 or 'A' team to give experience to young or prospective players prior to throwing them into a full international. Matches against touring sides, USA 'A' team, etcetera would be very beneficial to our national team program. After seeing Devesh Shankar's interviews with recent U19 graduates (Arslan Khan, Faisal Jamkhandi, Akash Gill), they express their commitment to the game and becoming professional. Cricket Canada helps themselves when they help these prospects achieve their goals.

For what it's worth, Johnny Grave from CWI mentioned Canada in an interview with PDP about having more games against USA. I've always thought why would big teams play warmup games against the USA and Canada? They wouldn't be competitive games. Story on cricinfo.

From the Cricinfo Graves interview:

"Opposition can play USA in warmups..." Johnny, Jamaica played "Team USA" in a warmup at one
of the Lauderhill matches some years back. It was a mismatch and the stands were empty. :(

"American market is somewhere where we have to grow cricket" Sure not growing at Lauderhill, Johnny!

"We're keen to bring our WI women's team..and even U19 boys" Johnny, USA/Canada women can't beat
Dutch or Thai women...No-one wants to see them a.o. in ten overs.

RE: https://www.emergingcricket.com/events/ ... he-winter/
This speaks to the broader topic of Canada’s youth programme, which has produced impressive results at underage level (the U19s side is arguably their most successful) without a clear pathway to bridge the talent gap into the national side – for example, seamer Faisal Jamhkandi was the joint-leading wicket-taker at the previous U19 world cup, but has not been selected in Canadian colours since. For any Associate nation, nurturing the player base is essential, and Kirmani agrees there is room for improvement: “In my opinion we need to start talking care of U19 players very seriously. Because they are highly skilled and fit players and that is the only pathway to make your senior team better.”
Canada has really failed to support its athletes is this respect. The current set of U19s are poised to join likes of Arslan Khan, Faisal Jamkhandi, Akash Gill, Bhavindu Adhihetty, Abraash Khan ... with virtually no support in attempting to move from the junior to senior team. Two years have been wasted for the graduates of our 2018 U19 WC team.

The Cricket Canada strategic plan (2018-20) mentions goals like "Development of HP infrastructure" and "Organize High level competition". CC has had lots of time to consult with athletes, coaches, provinces and leagues to make progress on a development pathway for men and women. Where are the detailed plans? Where is the progress? It seems everything is still at the talking stage. National team athletes and fans alike should demand to see action on these and other items and more information on what is actually happening within the governing body.

New Zealand is going big on girls cricket. I'm sure the reason is women's cricket is where the growth is going to come from. Canada is going to be left behind.
