ICC/Int'l cricket news/discussion

Post by ray » Tue Nov 21, 2023 11:36 am

Decisions from November 2023 ICC board meeting:
  • Implementation of 1 minute limit for bowling side between overs for ODIs and T20Is
  • 2024 U19 World Cup will hosted by South Africa due to Sri Lanka Cricket suspension
  • Transgender women banned from international cricket
    To be discussed:
  • The future of ODI cricket and revival of High Performance program involving Afghanistan, Ireland and Zimbabwe and perhaps some Associates
ICC remains very flexible on suspensions for certain members while taking a hard line on others.

I missed the golden age of cricket. I hate the idea of a clock. A time limit for the innings is good though.
I don’t understand the Sri Lanka ‘suspension’. It doesn’t affect their cricket - international or domestic. They can still participate in big tournaments.
What high performance program?
Apparently the USAC is talking about the Auti Cup and a women’s Auti Cup but then they always talk about it so no need to get excited.

^ Yes, apparently Sri Lanka Cricket both requested the suspension and that SL teams be able to continue playing. So other than the loss of the U19 WC and ICC "controlling" the budget, you're right that there is not much effect. Not much incentive for Sri Lanka's government to back down either.

The High Performance program is mentioned in this article: https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/icc- ... ts-1409262
The author seems pretty confident in his statements but there are no details (hence the discussion at the board meeting). We'll have to wait to see what comes of it.

Have to wonder how CC will handle the news of Danielle McGahey's enforced retirement from international cricket. Since they are the national board that she represented and was prominently featured in their social media, some sort of statement of regret would be in order. Or will they just pretend she never put on the Canada shirt ?

The United Arab Emirates U19s are again showing well in a competition featuring Full Members. This time it's the 2023 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup and the Emirates have beaten their Sri Lankan and Pakistani counterparts on the way to the final. UAE is not a perfect analogue for Canadian cricket but is more similar than many other Associates where cricket is a major sport. The success of that country at the youth level makes Canada's development look minuscule and glacial by comparison. Cricket Canada needs a fire lit under them when it comes to development of national teams.

Right, it's not a "perfect analogue"; in fact its a poor one. UAE is a country of 70% expats most from
south Asia (my guess is very few, if any, natives on the UAE team). Canada will be competitive
if the day comes when 70% of its population are south Asian expat.

With ODI money I hope there are real pathways established. There was a u17 tournament in 2022 but not 2023. There must be more high performance type competitions domestically. Also there should be emphasis on lots of girls age groups play.

Ireland win their first Test after 8 tries and nearly 6 years. It came against fellow "2nd Test tier" nation, Afghanistan but still a monkey they will be glad to have off their backs.
