Canadian Women's cricket

Post by ray » Fri Jun 21, 2019 12:40 pm

As the article on the main site (http://www.canadacricket.com/?p=12778) suggests, the admittance of women's cricket to the Commonwealth Games would be a significant boost to the Canadian women's game and cricket in general. While the Commonwealth Games member nations still have to approve participation, one hopes that to have reached this far the idea has the necessary backing.

The state of Canada's women's team suggests they will not be qualifying for the Commonwealth Games in the foreseeable future. However, merely participating in qualification for a multi-sport event should open some funding doors. Cricket Canada should be able to request support from Sport Canada for training.

More importantly, being part of the CG means cricket could be seen by a larger, more diverse Canadian audience than ever before. This could bring greater recruitment possibilities and some level of corporate sponsorship to women's cricket. Entry into the CG might allow Cricket Canada to push for Canada Summer Games participation.

One of the many barriers to the growth of the sport has been being seen. Being admitted to the Commonwealth Games club gives the best chance yet at removing this obstacle.

Don't count on it. How many Canucks care about, or watch, the CG?
Better avenue for North American purposes would be getting cricket
into the PanAm Games. But ICC doing NOTHING about this!

PanAm Games would be a good idea but games organizers won't be interested until the sport grows substancially in Latin America. The mismatches between the West Indian nations and everyone else won't be palatable to anyone.

Baseball's in the PanAm Games. How big is THAT game in Latin America?
See here the same old, depressing, attitude of the cricket community: endless excuses
why nothing can be done...no ambition to make things happen.

Cricket at PanAm Games

ICC Americas will look to become a member of PanaAm Sports and a participate as a core sport. #Santiago2023

This comes from the ICC Americas Regional Manager so it seems more than a passing comment. It would be quite a boost to Womens cricket across the region, even Canada, if it came to pass.

I take it you've already seen this, Timmy. ;)

Sure have, and have been wondering, like everyone else should be, why this Americas
Development Manager hasn't done anything to get cricket into the PanAm games.
Certainly haven't heard anything official.

BTW, this Americas Development Manager, in an interview some time ago, said some
big development plans were in the works for Canada. Where are they?

Cricket for the 2022 Commonwealth Games: https://twitter.com/ICC/status/1161186378736181248

https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id ... women-t20s
Cricket is set to make a reappearance at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) for the upcoming edition - Birmingham 2022 - with the top eight international women's teams from among countries that come under the Commonwealth ambit competing in the T20 format over eight days, with all matches taking place at Edgbaston.
This is not exactly the best news with only 8 teams. Quite how the "top eight international women's teams" will be decided is unclear. Certainly it means some West Indies and England cannot compete "as-is".

Regardless, Cricket Canada has to start recruiting more women into the program. Using the Commonwealth banner to attract sponsorship may help.

Interesting Emerging Cricket article on how Thai women's cricket has made such
impressive advances. They started recruiting players from softball (I assume that's American
softball and not softball cricket). Then the national body made a commitment to
native players, away from expat players. They play men's teams as part of their training.
ALL these things could be done for USA/Canada women's cricket if the national bodies show the will,
drive...AND swallow their narrow, ethnic, egoism.

Thai women brush aside "Team USA" in warm up match, 124-4 to 66-7.
Things are deeply, deeply, flawed with North American women's cricket :( :x

I don't think Canada could qualify for the Commonwealth Games 2022, but I hope there's a decent qualifying process.
