GTA Schools Cricket Update

Marc Garneau

West Humber

Marc Garneau CI won the CIMA Mayor’s Toronto Boys High Schools championship and West Humber CI won the CIMA Mayor’s Toronto Girls High Schools championship at Sunnybrook Park on Tuesday (May 29). The CIMA Mayor’s Girls High School final between York Memorial CI and West Humber CI completed a CIMA Girls tournament that included 9 school teams playing group and semi-final matches on a hot, sunny day at Sunnybrook Park last Thursday.

The four teams that qualified from the four regional divisions of the Toronto District Secondary Schools Athletic Association (TDSSAA) outdoor cricket championship also competed for the CIMA Toronto Boys High Schools championship. This was a move needed due to the limited time and resources available to play outdoor cricket. The spring term had also included TDSSAA indoor cricket championships for Boys and Girls.

The timing and sequence of Tuesday’s games at Sunnybrook Park took an initial timing hit due to the current Cross-Town Light Rail Transit construction activities which create road congestion along Eglinton Avenue East, and, most likely, by other construction activities. The two Boys High School semi-finals started late and the two finals, originally due to have the Boys final played before the Girls final ended up being played at the same time.

Experience gained from travel problems in getting to Sunnybrook Park for last Thursday’s CIMA Mayor’s Girls High School championships meant I arrived, later than hoped, around 9am at the ground. Several players and one of the coaches arrived later than me. Under TDSSAA regulations a game cannot begin until the official coach for each team is on site. Someone has to be formally accountable for each school; the lot falls on the coach.

The challenge of being able to raise a team and have a suitable coach available for the GTA finals in Brampton on Saturday (June 2, 2018) arose after the finals had been played. Various members of the Marc Garneau team and their coach have cricketing commitments in local leagues on Saturday, so Marc Garneau will not be able to play as CIMA Toronto Mayor’s champions at Batsman Park on Saturday.

Boys final: North Albion CI 41 all out  lost to Marc Garneau CI  42/2 by 8 wickets

Further scores for Tuesday’s games at Sunnybrook Park will emerge later, following a review of various photos of scorecard information.

Middlefield Collegiate Institute won last week’s CIMA Mayor’s York Region Boys High School championship at McCowan Reservoir based on information from Vinod Sharma (CIMA) and the umpires from that event, who were also on duty at Sunnybrook Park. Middlefield CI had lost to Maple CI in the 2017-2018 YRAA outdoor cricket championship final back in October 2017, Middlefield beat Markville CI in the CIMA Mayor’s final.

TCDSB Spring Cricket Championship

The Toronto Catholic District School Board is holding the Spring Cricket Championship for Elementary and Secondary schools at Centennial Park, Etobicoke today (Wednesday May 30, 2018) at Centennial Park, Etobicoke. There had been plans to play at Sunnybrook Park this year but I suspect the challenges of access to Sunnybook Park may have influenced the decision to play at Centennial Park.

Teams in this TCDSB event are co-ed; the teams include both boys and girls.

Brampton Boys High Schools Final and CIMA GTA Brampton Playoffs

My understanding that the Brampton Boys High School final remains on the schedule for early Thursday morning at Batsman Park, Brampton. The 2018 CIMA Mayor’s GTA Playoffs for the Canadian Tire Trophy will follow at Batsman Park on Saturday (June 2, 2018). Participating teams are expected to appear at the ground by 8.30am. The formal opening ceremony is due to begin at 9am and end at 9.30am. (EN)
